Didn't it double the standard deductible? Which for most people in normal states such as AL is WAY more than you pay in state taxes, so I'd venture to guess it won't really affect people as much as you think. The lib states like New York and Cali, they gonna hate it, maybe they'll force their states to lower their taxes or get the hell out of dodge.
Sounds like what they tried to do is for the average Joe salary probably like the majority of folks on this site, the standard deductible will be the norm.
I live in a state with no income tax, so maybe I'm biased a bit, but I don't see what the big deal is about it except that it just sounds bad on the outside. I'm more hopeful for the changes to corporate taxes, the repatriation tax, etc is good for the economy more so than I'm worried about whether I pay $400 less in taxes.
