Friends and family have seen 4 in pickens county. One jumped over the 4 wheeler my parents were riding. They were on a logging road that had been cut through a large hil. The cat jumped across the top of the hill.

Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

While I lurk more than post here, I feel compelled to respond. In the mid 70's we had land leased along the Dallas Wilcox county line, near Pine Barren Creek. On several occasions near the 89-41 intersection around 430 am, my father and I saw cougars, not one but 2 or 3, run across the road in front of the headlights.
In 1980 or 81, I was stalking the clear cut while my father sat on top of the hill. I was serpentining a hard wood/clear cut line along a creek bank. My father yelled and waved and pointed but i was to far away to know what he was saying. Well, I kept on doing my thing for a several hundred yards, and I saw him draw a bead in my direction and fire. about 100 yards in front of me, a tan cougar jumped up from behind a huge pine stump and bounded to my right... my father emptied the clip on him. His first shot hit the pine stump, the rest missed. After I climbed the hill he told me he yelled at because he lost sight of the cat. But, for the last hour he had watched the cat circle me going from wider to smaller concentric circles. He believed the cat set up a kill zone behind the stump, thus risking the shot in my direction. Take it for what its worth people. I also saw a large black cat in Autauga county in 1972 and the game warden was hunting with us that day.
Last year in lowndes county, we rode up on a black cat that head to toe was 6-8 feet long. I saw him clearly before dusk at 50 yards.... I have seen deer carcasses up in pine forks in coffee county.
You dont have to believe any of this, but I have no incentive to lie either. And by the way... have had game cams for 10 years, no sign of cats on any of them....

How many pens exist in AL and how many are not known of. A house in Sheffield has a pen where 2 mountain lions lived for a few years and the entrance to the subdivision had chimps in a cage as part of the sign. This was back in the 70's. anyone that drove thru Sheffield's Christmas lights back in the 70's drove right past that sign full of chimps.

A big black cat got loose not far from the Shoals, not sure if has been found, a lady had it.

No game cam pics, no verified sightings (taking the AON reward of $1,000), none killed on the hwy, none shot and never, ever, in the existence of the world, has there been a verified black (melanistic) mountain lion or panther (NOT jaguar as in above movies). They exist in the wild somewhere, just probably not AL. However, I know so many folks have seen them, I think they ought to have a season on them wink

I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine

clem, your sarcasm notwithstanding, you add nothing to the conversation. I have seen cougar/panthers in dallas, wilcox, autauga, lowndes and coffee counties. I said I have had game cams for 10 yrs and nothing on them. I said I saw doe carcasses in pine trees in coffee county. I said I saw several with my father either in the truck before daylight or when my father shot to kill.. I personally watched the damn thing bolt across the fresh cut clear cut. My sightings range from 1972 to 2009 across the aforementioned counties. Again, I have no incentive to lie. I dont do the good ole boy thing on forums. Thus I dont join in here at all, but lurk and laugh... believe me or not, I do not care. My daddy who came from Sumter County told me stories when I was a little boy about coon hunting on the Sucarnoochee, except they killed cougars, not coons... We owned the land, no brag just fact. Ask Buckeye Hunting Club.

bluetick, we had a place just a mile down 89 from 41. My Grandfather swore he had a doe drug out of the field by an animal after he gutted it and walked back to get his truck. There's some spooky stuff for real down between the 41 Bottom and Pink Bottom. I've lived it.

I can't say for sure that I've seen one so I won't say I have because I'm not 100% sure it was a panther. I have two friends that wouldn't lie to me and they said they have seen them. One friend lives in Adler which is about 8 miles from Sprott. He and his daughter were coming home from Selma one night and one crossed the road. They said it was a big brown cougar. He also was disking his garden spot and a gray or charcoal colored panther ran down a wood line 10 yards from his tractor. When he got close to the edge where it came from he found a hen turkey that it had killed and was eating. He figured that's why it let him get so close before it ran. My other friend probably saw the same one during turkey season about 500 yards from the other friends garden spot. He saw three does trott in front of him and the panther was following them. He was about 75 yards away and hunting the National Forest. He said it wasn't chasing the deer but it went in the same direction. The locals in that area say they have been seeing them for years. I don't hunt down there any more so I guess I'll never know for sure. Maybe I'll see one in Blount County. confused

When you or ANYone finds a black cougar/mountain lion in the United States and can verify it, let us know.

I am not saying there aren't mountain lions. I believe there are and have been for years. I hope there are. I don't know why with all the game cams in the woods there has not been a better, more verifiable photo or film of them. But I don't discount that mountain lions exist in the state.

But there is no such thing in Alabama as a "black panther."

This 109-pound cougar was killed by a farmer in St. Clair County on March 16, 1948.
