I can only speak from my experience....
But, most of the people that I know and converse with about hunting on a regular basis have just not hunted much yet this year. Not sure of all of the reasons why???
Myself, I have not even set foot in the woods to deer hunt yet. And that is almost unbelievable based on my past! LOL But, I made the decision last year to hold off hunting my place til after Christmas. I enjoy hunting the Rut. And, the lack of pressure and abundance of food should have the does piled up on me. And, if you have does, you will have bucks. I know that at least a couple of my friends feel the same way. We think that the season is just too long and the herd too pressured....which results in fewer sightings.
But, the time is nigh!

I'll always say this every chance I get when this topic is presented:
Percentage-wise, virtually nobody is reporting (I'd guess 5% to 15% "maybe"), and even though this will sound contradictory, I think the deer herd is in grave danger. Nowhere that I hunt has even remotely as many deer as it used to. My overall Alabama hunting experience these days is very close to causing me to lose interest. The return on investment isn't worth it anymore. And I don't really think the harvest regs are the problem, not even the liberal doe limits. I think it is the astronomical explosion in the number of hunters, combined with coyotes. Areas vary but there is a large % that would agree with you. A large % in this case I would say is 40+%. We've aged, hunting isn't like it use to be (use to be more of a social event), $$$, and kids have more options for enjoyment. So, I think the boom of hunters is correcting itself. Personally, from my stand point I'm in total agreement with Ikillbux. Now y’all don’t tell JBC the frat snowflake that he say deer are everywhere and y’all are just being doom and gloom lol.

BigT, I honestly don’t know if they are right or wrong. I did though log the buck I’ve killed and to my knowledge all of the deer we’ve killed in our club has been logged. All we can do is our part by logging them in and hope other hunters will catch on, but I bet if the State starts managing the deer herd off those numbers people will start complying quick because those numbers would call for major changes.....

But, the time is nigh! I've been doing that for several years. Does it work? I'm a firm believer now. I think it has increased my odds greatly. Still have an off year occasionally (last year was for me) but have more on years than when I hunted Dec.

According to GC 31,653 deer have been killed to date. 15,891 bucks and 15,748 does. Does anyone including our state officials believe these numbers are anywhere close to the actual numbers? And if not how does the State use the numbers for anything? I saw this 31K number posted on the DCNR's Facebook page this week and just laughed. Two months into the season and only 31,653 deer reported ... what a joke. Long way to go to get to the olden days of estimating 230K to 250K deer "harvested" annually.

I think they should have to write down your number on the ticket when you turn a deer in at the processor or at a taxidermist. If you ain't got the number get one before they can take it. woukd be easy enough just write it on the ticket would take 5 seconds.
If you're gonna be stupid you better be tough.

So you're in favor of private businesses - deer processors - becoming agents of the state conservation department to ensure compliance? To what lengths would these private businesses be required to work for the agency? Report all the numbers daily or weekly? Report any malfeaseance they hear about, such as a hunter bragging about killing an extra buck or doe out of season? A father putting his son's buck on another tag?

I knew you were gonna say that, are you a member of an anarchist group if not you would probably be a good candidate for one. Just be required to take the number before taking the deer. You act like you want to live in a land of make believe where nothing is required of anyone to run a business or just live in civil society. It's not like they would have to do anything that would require them to spend any money. If writing down a number on a piece of paper is to hard for someone to do then quit. No diffrent than they are required to get a business liscence. You are required to have a hunting liscence, a drivers liscence. Maybe you would rather we just did away with all requirements for every thing. Didn't have any laws regulations for anything.
If you're gonna be stupid you better be tough.

Maybe you would rather we just did away with all requirements for every thing. Didn't have any laws regulations for anything. If you enjoy providing more of your life to help the government and "for the good of society!" then go ahead. Anarchy is quite different than not wanting more governement intrusion in our lives. You sound like a liberal. Do you want to pay more taxes? Enjoy having more restrictions or requirements placed on your freedoms? By your standards, you wouldn't mind that every restaurant send in what you eat and when you eat it to the government so they can keep up with food consumption, fast-food vs. "sit-down" restaurants, meat vs. veggies, and so forth. That would be a "for the good of society!" deal, right? Because health, obesity, better lifestyle choices, etc., should be something everyone needs to be concerned with. People who are fatass lardasses who don't exercise and eat badly may be a drain on society due to increased health costs and medical issues. Why the hell aren't we keeping up with what everyone eats and then doing more with regulations, limits and such on this public issue? It's a society issue and public issue. Just like the "deer are for everyone" issue. Right? Yep, right. But everyone gets pissy and has a shitfit if anyone calls them a lazy fatass eating bad food. Or maybe any place that sells booze -- bars, ABC stores, gas stations, grocery stores, whatever -- must report the name, purchase, amounts, etc., of all booze. Alcoholism is a huge problem in society. By keeping track of all booze purchases and WHO does it, then we could maybe make positive changes "for the good of society!" through all these private businesses helping the government. Yes, let's go down this "anarchist" slipppery slope. Or as it's more better known, liberalism.

I have spent most of life protecting those rights and freedoms for the people of this country. Maybe you think we should just abolish all game laws and regulations, but I sir do not. I don't think someone writing down a number would intrude on your life one bit. Maybe you could give us a list of the laws and regulations that are to intrusive and should be done away with.

I have never advocated abolishing the laws and regs.
But I've made my point clear, as have others. MORE regulations, laws, rules and other "aw, it's just a little thing so do it" stuff is not what most Americans want, nor do most Americans want private businesses acting as agents of the state.
The more I think about it, getting restaurants and booze proprietors to work with the state and feds, and report all purchases and by whom and when, is a positive step to our nation's health and addition issues. Those should be requirements.
It will only take a moment at any establishment to provide our names and HealthCheck information either on an app or computer. That would be a good first step for the state and feds to monitor things and then apply limits.
Having governors on all vehicles, other than bonafide law enforcement or first responder vehicles, to set the speed limit at 55 mph would also be a "good for society" thing, too. Lower limits would save gasoline and help reduce accidents, injuries and deaths. No one needs to drive more than 55 mph. You'll still get there.
And it only would take a moment of everyone's time to have them installed; private businesses would have to report the installation to the state. If you don't get a speed governor installed then you'll be fined and have your driving privileges revoked.
Dannnngggg, this "for the good of society!" thing is amazing.
Mandatory deer check ID number at processors, saving America from obesity and booze problems, reducing vehicle crashes-injuries-deaths with mandatory speed limit governors ... hot diggity. We're on a roll.

Should also mandate that all taxidermists require the DCNR ID-number or whatever the deer processors are required to have, too.
Would be another good layer of mandated reporting in order to help society.
-- 48 hours to report to DCNR -- Provide 'harvest' info to processors -- Provide 'harvest' info to taxidermists
All hunting lodges would be mandated to take down all hunter 'harvest' information, too, and report it to the state. They're private businesses just like processors and taxidermists.

I'm sure eventually there will be a requirement of processors to take a number for records and work with the state. It's only a matter of time.
