Schools closing left and right Sheesh. I understand taking precautions, but im starting to think we are raising a generation of weenies. I usually say the same thing but 2014 was terrible in Birmingham. This model is shaping up similarly.

I usually say the same thing but 2014 was terrible in Birmingham. This model is shaping up similarly. You can’t take any chances with even minimal snow events in extreme cold. Snowing 8” in 35 degree temps is more manageable than snowing .5” in 25 degree temps. Looking at the radar there’s some moisture creeping up out of the gulf I am not certain they expected, so there could be more precip than what they’re predicting.

Hills.
Snow hits > that 32° pavement so it melts a little and gets super slick as air temps plummet within a couple hours. Non 4WD vehicles will have tons of issues on any hill, even slight inclines. That's exactly what happened in Birmingham in 2014. I gave rides all through Bluff Park for hours between I-65 at Alford Avenue and the Galleria mall. Drove about 100 people home in 4WD LOW and 1st gear. Thousands of cars wrecked, stuck or just couldn't go any further all over town.
AWD cars could make all but the steepest hills. 4WD could go most anywhere if drivers knew what to do. Downhill was nerve wracking at times though if a car in front of you ever stopped.
Y'all be safe.

so there could be more precip than what they’re predicting. Surely not! That's never happened before.

No snow days for us. Work rain or shine I did that for 30 years. Snow and ice meant round the clock work.

I bet those 75 year old school bus drivers have mad skills for driving in icy conditions.

I bet those 75 year old school bus drivers have mad skills for driving in icy conditions. Yup exactly. I'm not one to squeal think of the children but we don't have the equipment to deal with snow & ice. Children hurt/killed and equipment damaged/ totaled is very easily preventable.
