My buddy shot at a decent 8 point - edit, 7 point - about an hour ago. Shot twice but rushed them both. Really thick area. We're not finding blood even though it was close. He rushed them but said the 2nd shot felt good. Can a tracking dog find a deer without a blood trail? I called Tom Munoz and he said he may be available this afternoon. This would be my friend's first deer in 14 years.

Yes.....assuming he did hit the deer.

Thanks. I've got calls out to a couple trackers. He said that the first shot was iffy but he'd be shocked if he didn't connect on the 2nd one.

Really thick area? Look for snapped saplings close to where he shot. May confirm a hit or miss. Fresh shot saplings are easy to spot because there is bright green and white bark usually where the bullet hit. If he shot high you may not find any trace.

It may be too late now but you might want to give him a little time before tracking him just in case its a gut shot or something. If he was smoked then you would have likely already found him. If he shot the deer at 8:00, that was just an hour and a half ago.

Nice! Who found it? Tom? Ammon? And to answer your original question, yes, a good dog can track injured deer without blood. They can smell gland from between hooves that supposedly put off a certain scent when injured/stressed?

I will say this - we never would have found that dang deer. It didn't bleed a drop and crashed tucked next to and under a big old tree. I walked all around the stupid thing and never saw it. Woodrow took 5 minutes and went straight to him. Thanks Ammon McKinney!
