Folks We can't build a wall between Miss or Tenn. But this is some serious doo-doo. How do we curtail or even stop this CWD thing reasonably without hurting to many folks feelings? I would like to start now on an honest discussion, between the hunters, the state, and Feds. Honestly, we hate regulation in Alabama. Some of these high-fence operations or run-n-gun operations may be to blame but that does not matter now. The pestilence is spreading.
I think we as honest good people who see the danger see that we need to get ahead of this thing. We may only have one year season now to get ahead of it. Ya'll get on with it and we can figure this problem out.

The only way to eliminate it is to completely eliminate the deer population. Even then, I think the rare deer that ranges outside its core range messes that up.

Somewhere is scandanvia they killed an entire caribou herd to stop its spread. No one has the appetite for that here.

Killing the entire population all wouldn't stop it. The prions are known to be able to live in the soil, and now are believed to possibly live in or on plants based on recent research.

CWD is merely something to have to live with. Other states have had it for decades.

This really is a big deal that will change hunting policy HERE. If we as a community of hunter's and land mangers do not get ahead of this now then the State and Feds will just go ahead and make a policy that we all hate.

Well actually to get ahead of it we need to eliminate Mississippi's deer population.

Don’t know if this is the most up to date but here’s a response plan.

Nothing we can do. It will eventually keep spreading through natural pathways, and most likely make it here.

I don't have a problem with them testing now. Not every deer but maybe just a sample. I'm sure we would have enough volunteers to provide that. If you wait on a dead deer to test positive it's to late. This doesn't prevent cwd but until they get it figured out early detection is all we have

Ok, so every deer killed needs to go through a brain sampling before you can eat it. So lets get the brain checking practicals in place before it costs us $100 a deer.

Only test is post mortem, using a specialized stain on a specific part of the brainstem by someone who knows what they are doing. I knew it was coming, just didn't think it would be here this soon. No documentation that it is infectious in any way to humans. No it is not mad cow or affiliated with it. No it does not cause CJD in humans. It is specific to cervids for what is known at this time.

If this isn’t dangerous to humans then, honestly, the state should try to take every precaution but if it comes; well it comes. No, I don’t want to see mass populations of the Alabama herd wiped out but at this point what can the state, and hunters, reasonably do? I had to cut the skull cap off of a mountable buck I killed in Mizzou this year beacuase of the regulations here in SC. Still This stuff has spread to MS now. This disease may be something we as hunters just have to deal with. Unless the testing is done on public ground, I don’t advocate for mandatory testing. That would make outlaws of too many folks who hunt their own property. I sure as heck wouldn’t drive an hour round trip to get one tested if I could just drive 5 mins and have it in the skinning shed.

Again, my response is predicated on the assumption that this isn’t dangerous to humans. If it were harmful to us then I’m not sure I know a good answer, nor would I want to fathom what would happen to our sport.

It hasn't ever been shown to be transmissible to humans, but recently it has been transmitted to monkeys by feeding them diseased deer meat. Time will tell, but it may be a problem in the future.

When I read crows are one of the suspected vectors I knew we were screwed. How are you going to keep a bird that eats carrion from flying over state lines?

If theres no fix for this and its possibly being spread by other critters (crows) then what regulation/law would stop or slow it. Not planting green fields or to stop supplemental feeding may be the answer to some but would be a very hard pill to swallow for most everyone. The one thing I think everyone can do is keep monitoring your particular deer herd for the sign and symptoms and report it when you see it. This will give an idea of the progression and possibly help to find its source

I can't tell y'all just how many deer, deer heads and meat have been brought here from that area of Mississippi this season. I've done two skull mounts from that area. And you know what happened to all the leftovers? Crows, buzzards, coyotes, neighbors dogs, possums, and everything else that eats dead things. I know of people who have brought dead deer in from CWD positive states. They didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with it. We need to have a real education on this just like game check if we want to make an actual attempt to keep it out of Alabama, which it won't happen, it is already here anyway.
