I've still got a 1991-1992 Regulation Book. The rule contained the same wording it does now in regards to a garment or either a full size hat or cap:

1991-1992 Reg Book:
Quote
... an outer garment above the waist with a minimum of 144 square inches of hunter orange or either a full size hunter orange hat or cap.

The game warden that told you that was wrong. Any one of the three meet the requirements of the rule.

I don't think he was wrong if you read all of the rule. the last line of the rule that doecommander posted reads "The various shades of red, as well as camo-orange, are not legal."

Have you tried Google?

You're right. thumbup

I overlooked the camo description of his coveralls. Thanks for pointing it out.

If the coveralls were camo orange and not solid orange, the requirements of the rule were not met no matter how big and bright they were. I've got coveralls that are solid orange that were issued to me when I worked at the airport for Fedex during a layoff, and I guess I was thinking of them instead of paying attention. We called them our "orange crush". Nice to have in a cold wind and rain or snow.

If you have a gun & you are in the woods no matter what time you are considered hunting, lets use some common sense.

As others have said, legal mumbo-jumbo aside, the real question is about safety. The biggest time you're in danger of being shot is when you're on the ground (where deer live). Wear your orange and be safe, no matter whether you think it's legally required or not.

You're not legally required to harness yourself to your tree while hunting, but you'd be a fool not to.

If there was no law I'd still wear it. Deer can't see it. Hunters with GUN'S can.

Re walking out a the woods late. I just like walkin out without a light. You can see the orange, even in moon light.

But, is it the government’s responsibility to keep foolish people from doing foolish things? What's the difference between someone hunting and someone walking looking for a cow that's calving? Both of them can get shot but only one is "required" to have orange on. I am old school, stubborn and don't like the government telling me every time I should wind my watch. If you are your property, you should able to prance around with a set of horns strapped to your head if that's what floats your boat.
To the original poster, to avoid a ticket, I wear it at all times. Like someone else said it's just a hat that I would be wearing anyway.

Have you ever seen a comparison of camos to a color blind person(or a deer)? The "blaze" camo blends much better with the surroundings than do the other camos.

They could do that too and most judges would convict you of hunting after hours. You could probably beat it if you wanted to spend the money.

Reading this made me think of something I had thought of sometimes ago. If we wear orange for safety, why do our game wardens not wear orange? I know the answer, but wanted to hear your thoughts.

I think you could beat a ticket given to you after dark for not having hunter's orange on. If you are hunting every time you are in the woods carrying a gun as previously stated then you are hunting in your yard when you carry it in your house from your truck. Carrying an unloaded gun after dark and before daylight isn't hunting. It's walking with a gun.

Hunter orange is required so wardens can easily spot hunters. If we all wore gilly suites they would write a lot fewer tickets!

Really, flashlights should be required at dusk, dawn, and dark. That is when most shooting "accidents" happen.

Bucky205 encountered at least one GW who would disagree with this and was convicted in court.

Based on the story we were told on this site, he was walking with an unloaded gun on his shoulder. Hunting? Or walking? GW said the former.

These were my thoughts exactly, and I agree that game wardens should be required to wear whatever orange a hunter is.
Orange blends in to the background too much when it's dusky dark so I always walk with a flashlight even though I can see without it.
