I've taught one member here how to read one. Didn't think he was dumb. Didn't condesend to him. Simply assumed he never had a need and didn't have anyone show him before. So I kindly taught him.

I can read a tape, a rule, a square, I can use a blurb bob, a line level and a trowel, I can drive a stick or three-on-the-tree, and I know the difference between brake fluid and blinker fluid.

I routinely measure to the 32nd of an inch on my tape. I am 32, but have been making a living doing construction for more than half my life. I am currently doing the interior trim on a 11k Sq ft house and have a home builders license. I see people all the time wanting 12 + dollars an hour on these jobs that can't even read a tape. This observation includes all ethnicities and ages.

Been able to read a tape since I was about 8 years old. None of my daily driver vehicles have ever had automatic transmissions. I can wire a house and anything electrical you want hooked up in a vehicle. About the most elaborate thing I can build is a shooting house. Never dabbled much in carpentry. I hate plumbing with a passion, but can take care of repairs around the house.

I’ve worked for Mercedes-Benz for over 21 years now. Spent 6 years welding bodies together in the body shop then moved over to quality in the assembly shop. I can look at a gap anywhere on the car and tell you what it is in tenths of a millimeter and do the same for the flushness where two parts join. It drives the production guys crazy when they call me out to look at something my people wrote up and I tell them what the gap or flushness measures before showing them with a gage. Drives the audit folks crazy when I do the same to them. grin

And why is elevation measured in tenths?

Get the F out of the BATFE. The F is guaranteed by the US Constitution. Those other letters are not.

Been a while since i went to school to machine but we measured in .001" amd sometimes .0005 depending on what we were workibg on. I can still do precise measuring and convert to and from fractions to decimals. Dont use it much anymore but still do on occasion.

Send a new guy in the shop for a metric crescent wrench and put a timer on him. Good laughs.

Easiest way to measure deer antlers is convert fractions to decimal if you can do it in yer head quickly. Sure adds easy .

It's ridiculous. We have 10 guys that work "on the floor" at the shop. I know we have 4 of them that can not read a tape.

So, truthfully who can't read a tape measure?

Fur, this could be a good opportunity for you to do a good deed with your crew. Take some time and teach them, in a calm and helpful way.

Surveyors measure in tenths of a foot. Ten tenths to a US or Imperial system foot.

Prepare to be bored to tears looking at teeth every day. At least it pays well. You are spot on though. This new breed is something else. I love it when patients show up and I'm shooting my bow or changing my own oil on the parking lot. 😂

I remember the first question "Test" in an interview to hire in at the paper mill was being able to read a tape to the 1/16 of a in.

My brother is a master carpenter that can build a floating spiral staircase from scratch and trims out multi-million dollar homes.

So I was always held to a higher standard and was able to learn (at least enough to not hurt myself grin) all of those trades.

Fortunately today because of those mentors in my life I can do all sorts of stuff from design structures in 3D software to making detailed technical drawings by hand, to working on my on car, to building my own house.

I still seek out and cultivate relationships with mentors in my life. Two guys in particular:

Skip an older gentleman who is a retired land surveyor and craftsman and has taken me under his wing and taught me to forge and make my own knife, woodworking, etc...

Dan a younger engineer at work with a masters degree teaches me stuff every day and I in turn teach him stuff.

Many of us are fortunate like that, but some folks aren't as fortunate as we are/were. They either grew up without a father figure, or their father and/or older relatives were inaccessible. And now because of pride or embarrassment are unable to admit to others that they don't know how to do something. The first step in learning is to have the willingness to humble yourself enough to admit that you don't know something. And the important thing for a potential mentor to remember is that the person who wants.needs to learn something doesn't need to be made to feel like "a damn idiot" because they don't know something that you do or something that you feel they should already know. There are a lot of really smart people that are simply ignorant, and ignorance can be overcome.

I'm 57, but I still approach almost every job or project like I am a kid, with an open mind and a willingness to learn. I have learned that there is always something new to learn even sometimes form people much younger than you.

The world needs more mentors willing to help and teach and more people willing to learn. It's one of the biggest problems we have in society.

BTW... I can read a tape, but I actually like the cheater tapes. grin

I've been in engineering and design a long time, closing in on almost 40 years, and I really wish that Jimmy Carter had been successful in converting the US over to the metric system. It would have made everything much easier, and by now we would have all already been accustomed to it.

This is a great post! Irish I here you completely and TopCat can testify for me. He's the most knowledgeable builder, craftsman I know. When I built my garage I called him for advice daily. I can read a tape and slowly read a square I used to build and surface parking lots in a past life so I can read blue prints as well. They best thing you can teach these younger guys is to not be so dang arrogant, accept what you don't know and ask for help when you need to. I come across as a kid as well sometimes because when I do something I want to do it right and I don't mind being humble and asking anyone I know, knows more than me. I'm 45, I'm pretty dang capable of just about anything but it's only because I learned from those that knew and I wasn't afraid to ask questions and learn. I grew up driving sticks and I loved a three on the tree. I don't know why but I guess it made me feel like I was doing something. When I question myself about anything I call someone who knows.

Not a problem. I can read 32nds and about half of the 64ths and convert them into decimals and vice versa in my head. The only real problem is being able to see the 64ths and even the 32nds on a scale if the light isn't good .
I can convert millimeters to inches and back, up to about an inch with only a few that I don't know.
It just may have something to do with being a machinist and or carpenter all of my adult life.

I guess I have never sat my butt in or on a piece of machinery I couldn't figure out how to drive.
