Have you lost your mind??? Growing up we had 2 chicken houses. 30,000 layers in each house for a total of 60,000 freaking chickens. I hated each and every one of them. They didn't quit laying because it was Christmas day, or Thanksgiving, or birthday, or friends were going to the river. Water lines don't freeze in the summer time. It would get so cold in that water you would lose feeling. In the summer heat the ammonia smell would take your breath. Every dang day!! Screw a chicken, screw an egg, screw Col. Sanders, screw everything poultry related.

central ala,
I was the dang messican.

I know of one, don't know how many houses, within the last 2 months the owner walked into the bank and gave them the keys to all locks. He too bad had enough.

Seriously, I hated it. But that was nearly 40 years ago and I'm sure the technology makes everything much better.

Yeah, I don’t want to get in too deep off the bat. Just a few to piddle with and break as close to even as possible and work my way up from there.

Centralala you must have about the same opinion/past with chicken houses as I do. In the 60's daddy built two houses and we had layers, then we had a couple of years of pullets and finally broilers. All feeding was done for several years with 5 gallon buckets. Hell of a nasty job, but we ate a LOT of chicken...........

We started in Clayton with a couple of house in Louisville. Then we moved here and built the big ones, for that time anyway. We were top of the line automated with all Big Dutchman equipment. And it was still all day, everyday.

Friend of mine has good full time job and raises cattle, chickens, and quail after work. Always working but seems to enjoy it. Not sure how many cows and bulls he has but just had 5 new calves. From what I understand, he does really well raising quail. Seems like the money is in the quail.

We (my Dad and Grandad)always had cows growing up, and about every other animal you can imagine, I was worked like a rented mule between farming and sawmilling growing up. I don’t know but I always thought with cows you either had a lot of cows or you were growing dinner. My Dad had high dollar Angus stock and my Grandad just had a mixed herd.

I think my Dad did ok on calves but I also remember a $20k (1978) bull that became useless the day he was unloaded from trying to jump a fence while being way prepared for breeding cows on the other side. High dollar hamburger taste about the same as the cheap stuff to me.

I would start with some good cow-calf pairs. Buy a decent Bull. Try to raise a black/white face calf. Don't waste time or money with hay equipment. Buy it and store inside a barn. Get some hay rings so they won't waste it all. You will need a good catch pen with a head catch. The extension service offers a Master Cattleman's program so go to it. I've had cattle off and on all my life. Some years you will make good money and some years you will give them away. Overseed a pasture or two with Marshall ryegrass for winter graze. Don't sell your calves till they hit 700 lbs.

Buy cows from a local farmer or heifers bred or open at a special heifer sale. I would say that 95% or more of the cows at the stock yard are someone else’s culls.(Slow to breed, won’t breed, raises a sorry calf, old, bad feet, bad udders). Don’t try to run to many cows, a pair per 2 acres will cut way down on the amount of hay and feed you need during the winter or during a drought. Find you a good source to buy your hay from. You can’t justify hay equipment with only 80 acres of land.

You must spray and fertilize to have good grass. If you can get chicken litter it will save you money on fertilizer and it does better than commercial fertilizer. Be able to identify all your cows. Keep records of every cows performance.(Date of calving, weight of calf when sold, age of cow). Don’t keep an unproductive cow, she will not make any money. I ear tag all my calf’s when they are born and band all the Bulls. Steers will usually bring $50 or more a head than a equal weight bull calf. The steers also seem to weigh heavier than a bull calf of the same age.
