Kenny Smith. He was part of the deal that got Bama on NCAA probation around the turn of the century.
He ended up at Tennessee (and eventually UT Chattanooga), I think, but never played much...if at all.
North Jackson went on to a 14-1 record that year and won the 5A State Championship……..That one loss was to 4A Guntersville and is probably still one of the top 10 best games of all time at G'ville…..Not only were we playing the #1 team in the state in the next classification above us.....we had them scheduled for homecoming.....and we beat them in the final minutes of the game by driving the entire length of the field and converting two 4th downs on the final drive. We had great coaching......The coaching at G'ville now still stems from those days.....Coach Reece, the current coach, was our defensive coordinator back then. This was in the mid 90's

We played him my JR year and after the game my dad looked at me and said, "well son, the best way I can describe what happened tonight is that was a grown man playing against boys. Wait 4 years and you'll see him doing the same thing in the NFL." He was right. Absolute stud.

The best RB I've seen in person probably would be Bo Jackson or Emmitt Smith. Just their overall ability to read the field, shake or take tackles, determination, and bursts of speed on the corner or in the hole were all just incredible. I never saw Herschel in person, though, but would put him right in that group.
As for an RB who did other stuff, thus being in the "athlete" category, I'd say the best I saw in person might be Pierre Goode. Fast, tenacious, what I call "play smarts" - being able to essentially know what was about to happen and react - determined, relaxed-smooth, almost graceful. He was remarkable to watch.
Was talking with Antonio Langham once at Bryant Hall years ago about the great run of Colbert County-Courtland-Hazlewood athletes and mentioned his cousin, "Snake" Langham. He played in the early 1970s, I think, or late 1960s over there. Antonio said of all the players who came out of the area, Snake was the best.
Saw Herschel in B'ham playing pro ball. I'm afraid I don't remember much, he was just a blur running from end zone to end zone on B'ham.

I forgot about seeing him with the Generals in that B'ham USFL game at Legion Field. Was there, too. Just didn't see him in person at UGA.
He was a beast.
Earl Campbell, then Herschel and George Rogers at South Carolina, Bo, Barry Sanders at OSU. Quite a run. I remember when Rogers won the Heisman and I was like, "WTH is he?"

Pretty sure NJ was 4A when they won the ship and had all those good teams every year in the 90s.
I had to go back and look…hell it's been nearly 25 years ago…...and you’re correct. They won the 4A Championship in 93’ my sophomore year. We beat them at their house that year to give them the one loss…..My junior year was when we had them scheduled for homecoming with them being the defending state champs. That was what was made out to be the big deal I remember. Who plays the defending state champs for homecoming??? They went to 5A that year and it seems like were still ranked pretty high when we played them…..They came into our house to revenge the one loss from the year before and we beat them again that year on the final drive. They were pissed at us after that and purposely scheduled us for their homecoming for my senior year. They had a linebacker move in from Cleburne Co to play his last year of ball there that was rated as one of or maybe the best LB in the state. I don’t recall his name but he was committed to play for Bama up until I believe he stabbed somebody or something stupid along those line. He was a beast too. Something like 6’3” 240 playing LB in high school…….I played RB that year and him and the SS , that was also going to play Div I ball, just teed off my arse all night long. They beat us down that night.

Alan Evans was a hoss at The University of Enteprise in the early 80's. No Bo Jackson, but not far behind. Came to AU and never did much except make a baby bammer linebacker.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

When I was in high school in the mid 90’s I played against Bobby Thomas from Cordova, and Mac Campbell from Alexandria. I’m sure there were others but them two stand out far above the rest. Shannon Twitty from Hanceville was good as well.

Correct….I got my years mixed up. North Jackson went to 5A the year following winning the championship. The MLB from the 96 team you mentioned was Carlton Persons and he was an animal for sure. That team was no joke. Went undefeated and was ranked #1 in 5A until they had their wins vacated because of Carlton's eligibility snafu.

Yep, I believe that was him. I got to play against him twice. We played him at Cleburne Co in the playoffs of my junior year and then he transferred to N. Jackson and I played him again my senior year. I played RB both of those years so I got to see him a lot. My senior year when we played them we had lost most of the offensive line from the year before and were playing with undersized guards in the middle that weren’t any bigger than me and green underclassman at tackles. To make things worse, we got a new coach that year and he decided instead of continuing to run the wing-t that we had been so successful with…..he decided we needed to go back to the good ol’ fashioned “I” and play power football against teams like NJ. Sooooooo….. I got to line up in an I formation and run straight at that big sum bitch all night long with 190 lb blockers in front of me. I was tough as nails for a 185 lb running back so don’t think I didn’t ball up and hit him with everything I had….. But we were just WAY over matched that year. It’s the only game I can ever remember playing where I didn’t care if I got the ball any more or not. I felt like I was running for my life……

NJ has had a bunch of good ones, but that was one of the top 2 or 3 defenses in school history. Maybe the best. The speed, size, and toughness was unreal. Their stats against 5A and 6A teams, BARELY being a 5A team and historically a 4A team, were nasty.
