And yet the most dangerous drivers (millennials with cell phones) are allowed to cause thousands of crashes everyday, with no consequences whatsoever. It's not just Millennials but yes, this is true. I'm damned sure not for more government regulations but when you have idiotic retards who can't disassociate themselves from their phone while driving then something should be done. Some gizmo in the vehicle to block the phone, jail time, revocation of license, something. I have a feeling the powerful Tech companies, the Big Brothers watching us, lobby the government pretty hard to prevent these blocking vehicle gizmos from being created, though. Monday afternoon I was behind an SUV that swerved right, left and then right with the front tire going off the road. Big puff of dust, rocks flying, vehicle jangled-jerked swerved back into the right lane and NEVER a brake light. I got beside it and the girl - either late teens or early 20s - had her phone in her hand looking at it. I laid on the horn and she didn't even glance up. I hate them and drunk drivers, too.

Look for a hands free law soon. Georgia just passed a law requiring your hands to be free from all electronic devices or get fines. You are allowed 1 touch of the phone to answer a call if the device is mounted in the car. ^^^^I am in full support of this^^^^^ Me too. I pass people every single day that are looking down into their laps. You know they are texting. Yep, with Georgia's new law, you cannot have the phone on any part of your body, like in your lap, even though, that technically is hands free. Good. I fully support this law and hope it passes AND hope the law enforcement actually enforces it, unlike the "left lane driver" law they ignore.

What if you install the device and drive a different vehicle? You're breaking a court order, gonna pay more money and, you break any diversion agreements

And yet the most dangerous drivers (millennials with cell phones) are allowed to cause thousands of crashes everyday, with no consequences whatsoever. You are 100% spot on, However, drinking and driving has been a problem since vehicles first hit the road and they (clowns in the legislature) havent stopped it yet. The cell phone distraction is a relatively new problem. It will take years of accidents and deaths before the clowns catch up. Its unfortunate but true, it took groups like MADD started raising cane before the clowns started making stiffer DUI penalties. And DUI penalties still aren’t strict enough. Driving under the influence should have ZERO tolerance. A friend of mine is a state trooper, he says the cell phone distraction is rapidly overtaking alcohol in causing accidents but because there are no “teeth” in the law, people continue to do it. This trooper can get on a rant about DUI, seen a 2 year old girl thrown through a windshield and killed when hit head on by a drunk driver. The guy had 4 DUI’s in 5 years. It all goes back to the Clowns we continue to elect in the Legislature Circus... Rant over.......

Georgia just passed a law requiring your hands to be free from all electronic devices or get fines. You are allowed 1 touch of the phone to answer a call if the device is mounted in the car. Yet another unenforceable law. The only way to stop it is to prosecute anyone who causes a wreck while using a phone. Using the hands ain't the problem it's the mental distraction.

Four years? I take it this was not his first DUI. Judge got pissed he didn't blow. DA, Officer, lawyer and my son had a deal in place. From the video of the traffic stop, the DA knew he couldn't prosecute. She wouldn't go along with it and sentenced him to the harshest penalty at that time in the state. He should have gotten a better lawyer and appealed, but didn't. He didn't have the money and I wasn't about to pay for it.

Alabama will now require you to install a breath testing instrument that will only allow your vehicle to start after you blow into it with no alcohol detected after a conviction. A buddy had to have one put in after a FL DUI and they are expensive and it is on your dime if you want to drive. Not completely true. The law was originally suppose to require all DUI offenders to have the interlock installed. However, the law as passed, doesn't require it. You can avoid the interlock by agreeing to a 90 suspension of your license. However, if the DUI is aggravated ( you blow a .15 or higher or you refuse the breath test) the interlock will be required in all cases. The new law would requires the instillation of the interlock for 90 days for a 1st DUI, if you don't take the 90 suspension. Requires the interlock for 1 year for BAC over .15 or a test refusal. Requires a 60 days suspension and mandatory interlock for 3 years for a 3rd DUI. Requires an additional interlock duration if a convicted person is operating a vehicle at any time that doesn't have the interlock, of if they are stopped and refuse a breath test while on interlock. The new law also requires an interlock on individuals who are placed into pretrial diversion for a period of 6 months. Lastly, if you live more than 50 miles from the nearest interlock installer, you are exempt from the requirement.

That is an illegal sentence and he should be able to get relief from that requirement. The longest period allowed under the law was and is 3 years and that is for a 3rd or 4th DUI.

I thought that just meant that you had to take the original penalty of suspended license. instead of being able to drive after blowing... you just can’t drive.

That may have been the case around here in the past, but one of the local tire shops here in Andalusia has acquired the equipment necessary to install these devices. DUI Laws Changed July 1st

When I worked at saflite customers would come in needing a replacement windshield and id get their signature and keys and go get the vehicle, every now and then it would not start or turn over or whatever and I'd have to go get the customer and they would act like it wasn't a big deal. One even told me I had to blow in the thing. No buddy you pull this machine around back and I'll fix it I'm not putting my pie hole where you had your pie hole

So does the interlock do a DNA test or something? Chances of a person that got a DUI being with a person that is not drinking when he is? Near zero. And if they were, why not just let them drive and avoid the risk?

I'm in a rural area. Sounds like a business opportunity for me........if I only knew something about vehicle electronics.
My buddy in Florida was originally told he had to have one and what it cost. He was almost ready to just go turn himself in at the county jail but because he lived in Alabama, they didn't make him do it in the end. They were tough on him. He had to go to a MADD meeting and apologize to all the people that lost loved ones to DUIs. He absolutely hated that. Cost him a ton of money too and almost cost him his job.
