Been using a 1895ss Marlin 45-70 for years. Eyes got weaker so I topped it with a Zeiss diavari 3x9x 36. It's a deer killing machine with federal fuzion 300gr solid points
Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

Why not a 405 Winchester?

Why not a 405 Winchester? Drops like a brick.

Why not a 405 Winchester? Drops like a brick. They say that about the 35 Whelen too, but I've made a one shot kill at a measured 276 yards with it. I've never owned any of the big bore lever guns but I like the looks of the 1895 Winchester and the history of the 405.

The 405 grain can reach out and kill easily to 400 or 500 yards in the hands of a skilled marksman. Not me, of course, but someone who is much better than me. When I say, "drops like a brick" that's a relative term in comparison to the smaller loads available. And because I'm not the marksman, that I once was, I prefer to shoot something with a flatter trajectory within my typical hunting ranges.

Yeah it has it's place and, like most things, it has it's limits. The 405 would not be my first choice for most western hunts, antelope, mule deer, or even most of deer hunting in Alabama. However there are properties its suited for. About 20 plus years ago we hunted a pine thicket in Pickens County known as the Briar Patch. It was so thick that 100 yards was a long shot and the 405 might have been a better choice than the 257 Weatherby I was toting. The 405 would also make a great bear rifle.

You do know we're discussing the 405 grain 45/70 round, right? Not the 405 Winchester caliber. Totally different animal.

The title is 45-70 but looks like the topic evolved to include most big bore lever gun calibers. Even the 44 Russian was mentioned. Thus my original question, "Why not a 405 Winchester"? Guess I could have started one of those spin-off threads. My bad. I actually thought you was asking about the 405 grain. My reading comprehsion and ADD don't compliment each other.

I've got a NEF 45-70 and I've killed several deer with it. I worked up a 200 yard load with Varget and 350gr hollow points that's no fun at all at the range but it does step on out there.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

All this talk about thutty thutties and 35 rem's, so who plans to tote a real lever gun in the woods this fall and what are you shooting in it? I tote a 1895sbl that is chopped to 16" and threaded with a silencerco hybrid on the end. I shoot 350gr hornady handloads for deer. I also have a 405gr coated cast lead subsonic load I have been playing with that I want to use for the 50 yd and under stands. I love my 3030 too but there is nothing like a 45-70 in my opinion.

I feel the same way about the .444 and the 30 - 30 with powermax rounds.
