A few months I bought a like new Mossberg Maverick 88 tactical pump shotgun with the 18.5"barrel at a steal of a price. It's basically a Mossberg 500 with the safety on the trigger guard and a few parts made in Mexico. I watched several youtube videos praising the Maverick 88 as an exceptional buy and comparing it favorably to the 500 model which it is almost identical for only about 1/2 the price. Then I saw a video where a guy was comparing the 500 and the Rem 870. He held the 500 about 2' off the ground and dropped it on its side. the impact, which was not much, made the pins that holds the shell lifter in the receiver move inward and locked up the action. You had to keep trying to pump to finally get it to work, He said every Mossberg 500 model (inc the 88 and I assume the 590) he has ever seen will do this. I tried this with my 88 and it locked it up on the first try. Looks like Mossberg would fix this issue.
Here is the video....

Funny this was brought up.. I watched a video two nights ago about this issue. Ive got a couple 500's and a maverick 88 and never had a problem from any from normal use in the woods.

I had a 500 a few years back and liked it and the 88 is VERY hard to beat for the price. Hard to believe this did not show up with the 590 which is the same gun when it was adopted by the military. There are A LOT of 500's out there in the police forces. ANY gun should function after a 2 foot drop - ESPECIALLY one that your life may depend on.

The fore arm on the 88 is different too. It has no action slide tube. The action bar is pinned into the fore arm that has a lot of plastic molded into it to make up the difference of a steel action slide tube.
Try removing the shell carrier/lifter and pull the legs apart to put more spring tension on the shoulders that hold it in the receiver.
There are two types of gun enthusiasts ... Those who have been F#CKED by PTG and those who will be!

4 different agencies I've worked for, and never once had anything other than an 870 as a duty shotgun. That said, I've owned 3 500's and 1 old 600...never had a second's trouble out of any of them.
