I would be in Montana if it weren't for family responsibilities.

Depends on which part. West of the continental Divide (Missoula) has great weather and just enough snow in the winter. East of the divide is down right brutal in winter with wind chills well below zero. I personally don’t want to live anywhere where it’s cold enough to kill you in a short amount of time

Ever heard of heat strokes? In 2016 there were 12 heat-related deaths in Alabama.

I just got home from a wedding in Sun Valley, ID. Man that is some beautiful country. Highs right at 50 and lows in the upper 20s. We got a light dusting of snow last night too. It was a rude awakening when I got off the plane back at home and it was 93

If I ever left Alabama or Mississippi, I'd move to Wyoming, Idaho or Montana and open up a Southern diner specializing in fried chicken, cheeseburgers and good BBQ...I'd open up for lunch and supper and probably eat my profits then move back home or live under a bridge.

If I wasn't already retiring to Lookout Mountain in Northeast Alabama it would be Western North Carolina. I'm not a big fan of really cold weather, but I do like real seasons. I believe at least North East Alabama will be getting some nice fall weather and nice color to the leaves in a week or so.

I will say this... I have taken several motorcycle trips to the Ozark mountains in Northern Arkansas and even though no one has mentioned that area yet, it is a beautiful place and most of it is very rural. I can guarantee you it certainly has four distinct seasons. Plus I would think you could find some really nice land for very reasonable prices there. The Ozarks would be my second or third choice for a place to retire neck and neck with Western North Carolina. The only thing that would make it third place is that it's several hours farther away from all my people.

So you'd be one of those azzholes who move away from someplace, you don't like, and try to make the new place exactly like the place you left. Just stay where you are. smile

Just sent my kid to college in Utah. I'd move out there tomorrow if I could. Fantastic place.

It really is. Our oldest daughter and son in law lived in Layton for three years while stationed at Hill. The area is absolutely beautiful. From Moab, Park City, Snowbird, Salt Lake City and Antelope Island. There is always something to do outside and the state residents take advantage of it. Starting on Friday the interstate is full of people pulling campers and SXS. Plus the area is very conservative with the mormon population. The weather is nice as well. Hot summer temperatures with low humidity and lots snow to play with in the higher elevations if that’s your thing. Winters aren’t as brutal as the East Coast but still damn cold. Another advantage is it’s easy to fly in and out of with a connection in DFW to the South. And it’s a 4 hour drive to Yellowstone. Yes I could live there.

Amen to the Western NC relocation! Wife and I spent a week up there last Fall near Franklin and it was wonderful. Beautiful country and super nice people.

Add me to the list of folks who would relocate somewhere cooler in a heartbeat were it not for family obligations and relationships. Even with family ties here I still dream of moving somewhere different occasionally. Minnesota is a place I've spent a lot of time in the last 4 years near the outskirts of St Paul and over toward the Wisconsin state line. The people there are very polite, not the stereotypical rude yankees you find in other northern locales. Lots of outdoorsy folks who love to hunt, fish and shoot guns. Beautiful landscape, lots of water, winters can be fairly brutal but the Spring, Summer, and Fall is heaven. I went to a baseball game in St Paul back in July, it was 70 degrees with a light breeze and about 50% humidity at 7 PM, dropping down into the 60's by game's end. I think it was bout 90 degrees and 80% humidity back here when I checked the weather app.

Of course I have. You took what I said out of context. Even in 110 degree heat index you can go outside and do something. Yes you might need some shade and you have to stay hydrated. In -30 windchill you can lose fingers and toes in short order with proper gear. And that gear makes it very difficult to do anything.

I’ve worked in 46 of the 50 states and an additional 13 countries both close to the equator and above 62.5 degrees North. The most miserable I’ve been is by far when it’s bone chilling cold and dark most of the time. There is a reason that specific part of the 48 is sparsely populated. The cold and short days becomes depressing over time. Even for people that were born there.

We went back out west for vacation this year we like it so much.
BUT
You also gotta look at housing prices out there.
Most places the housing is really high.
Ketchum, Sun Valley, Id. Bozeman, Missoula,
I really cant afford most places out there.

I'm in the middle of trying to deal with a family business and retirement for my FNL and health problems/dementia with my MNL and construction industry downturn several years ago finally hitting us hard right now as we are several years delayed dealing with it.....so for that Faulkner runon sentence opening, I'm about ready to move to a cabin out somewhere and make some cash doing something else for a while. If I didn't love my wife and kids, I'd go by myself.

Big baby... grin Seriously, as long as you're prepared, it's not nearly as bad as you think. It's really amazing how we all deal with the snow around here. We get a lot of lake effect storms. Two or 3 ft overnight isn't uncommon. By the end of the day we're all cleared out and good to go. If you embrace winter, it's awesome. I disagree with it killing ya. I think it's good for a person to be out in the cold, fresh air. Did I mention ice fishing? thumbup
