The only thing I can think of that would make that big a difference in the bouy wind speed and the wind speed from the Hurricane hunters is that the bouy is on the surface and the hunters are 10,000 feet or more off the surface..

That's exactly what I wanted posted. That buoy was exactly 20 miles NE of the storms center at 4:50 am and the sustained winds were 60 mph with gusts to 75 mph. What is correct? Those actual wind readings on the buoy or the 145 mph they are talking about on the weather channel?

The only thing that matters is storm surge, on ground wind speed, and how many naders it spins off.

Skinny and other wather experts: we’re down here in Fort Morgan with the fam for fall break. Y’all think it’s safe to sit tight or head north? I’m fine with rain, wind, traffic, hassle, etc. but don’t want to be stupid and ignore real danger if there’s a chance this thing decides to cut West...what say ye?

Those mobile homes are going to end up in south GA. I don’t understand the stubbornness and ignorance of some people.

It is already turning a little to the north north east so you should be just fine in Fort Morgan..

I'd sit tight for now. I get my weather from the actual Eglin AFB meteorologist who makes decisions about plane moves. My next door neighbor is the F35 squadron commander. Just talked to him and they are saying 45 mph here in Niceville. That would mean you're looking at a lot of rain and prob 20-25 mph, if that, at Fort Morgan.

You’re fine where you are, but even if you were not going to be fine you would have waited way too late to leave.

The wind speeds they use to gauge the category are right smack dab on the eyewall - 20 miles either direction makes a big difference.

Know that, at what elevation level do they rate the hurricane wind speed now? Highest wind speed recorded on the trip, avaerage of all elevations,? Years ago, the weathermen would tell you what the wind readings were from the hurricane hunters at 10,000, 5,000, 1000, 500, and surface, now they just say 145 mph. I'm guessing they figure people are too dumb to make good life safety decisions themselves so they just report the highest.

I'm also betting they are reporting the WS at either 10,000 or 5,000 foot up in the eye wall.

How’s that, Matt? Not being a peckerhead but asking sincerely...We can be packed up and headed north in an hour or less and it’s my understanding that landfall is still several hours away...You figuring traffic congestion?

I’m a hurricane novice.😁

I would assume he means the traffic, 65 north was a parking lot from Montgomery up through Birmingham yesterday it was like that all day long....

Yep. MAtt's 100% correct. Worst thing you can do is get stuck in gridlock traffic on an open highway right in the middle of a bad hurricane. That or get up the highway and every gas station is out of fuel from the 1000s of others that already left cleaning it all out.

My mobile home in Westville will likely be destroyed and I'm well inland. It's anchored and withstood up to 35-40 mph winds before but this is really bad. Hate to lose my deer mounts. Insurance can't replace that. If it does that'll be my last mobile home. I'll rebuild a Small metal home or similar that can take a hurricane. mad
