Most of Mexico Beach will be gone. The houses that were built after 2004 will still be there but damaged. Most everything that was built pre-2004 (new hurricane code) will be destroyed. The majority of the houses down there have been there for 30 plus years so I would expect most of it to just be completely gone. Storm surge will be the main culprit.

Fox just posted about 10 pictures from Parker and Calloway which is roughly a couple miles north of Tyndall. Roof and tree damage mostly. Nothing wiped flat in any these pictures like I expected to see. Matt, not sure where you saw gusts to 180 at Tyndall. Highest I've seen officially reported on Bay County sheriff's update was a single gust to 134 at Tyndall. The did say pretty much all of Mexico Beach is currently under about 10 ft of water.

My crazy partner, who stayed at his Alys Beach house, west side of PCB, never lost power and was watching the storm on TV an hour ago when I talked to him.

They said, several times, that the wind speeds they were reporting were taken from 4500 feet. What people would seem to be more concerned with is what is the wind speed at ground level, or roof level, what is the storm surge going to be like, etc...you know, things that will have a direct effect on them and theirs. I will also say that they didn't overstate storm surge a bit, and that's where the bulk of the damage was caused.

Conveniently missed this one, huh?...

My comment has to do with media people, like TWC, over-hyping these things like Chicken Little running around screaming that the sky is falling. When you're on TV, you're ratings-driven, and when you're ratings driven, you have to hype even the lesser stuff. The damage I see on TV right now is some flooding, and some wind damage commensurate with a cat 1 or 2 storm...trust me, what they're showing right now isn't anything close to cat 4 damage. A bunch of people in PC are in contact with people elsewhere, and are posting pics and videos to show that it wasn't as bad as the hype suggested. So, the media got the ratings from hyping this one up, just like they did when they hyped the wind damage from Harvey...on the one hand, maybe the hype is necessary to make people listen about the potential dangers, but on the other hand, eventually that doesn't work, either. Quote from 2 different people I've been in contact with in Panama City this morning, that don't know each other... "...we don't pay any attention to TWC anymore, they're always full of sh!t."

I'm 20 miles North of Dothan and we are starting to see some strong winds. The next 2 hours are gonna be the worst.

For reference high CAT 4/CAT 5 winds at ground level looks like a clear cut as far as damage goes. 150+'sustained (at ground level) will leave nothing at all standing. Every single tree will be down or completely stripped of al leaves and most branches. Any house built pre-2000 will be nothing but the concrete slab. A lot of post 2000 stuff will be completely gone too. The new hurricane codes for coastal FL communities are only designed/built to withstand 130 mph winds.

I didn't conveniently miss a damn thing. I'm not trying to argue the fact that the media hypes these things up. You are correct in that regard. However, I am just pointing out that you made a statement (see above) that flat out said "The damage I see on TV right now is some flooding, and some wind damage commensurate with a cat 1 or 2 storm...trust me, what they're showing right now isn't anything close to cat 4 damage". Did anyone in the media overhype that sentence for you? I agree with everything you said in regards to how these storms are covered, but there is no damn way in hell someone can honestly believe that this storm did not cause Category 4 damage.

Bob, what they've shown on TV so far is not cat 4 damage. Abolt300 has it right when he says what he did above. Cat 4/5 damage looks bulldozed!

Just talked to my cousin in Tallahassee. Lots of wind and rain there but they're ok. They're on the east side of town and haven't lost power but there are a lot of people without power in the area.

Let's try and put this is prospective. We are disagreeing on the strength of the storm and how it's being reported. But the real facts are that a lot of people's lives are being destroyed or changed forever. Let's take a moment to say a prayer for them
