OK so now the rest of the Story,
So after a lot of high fives and hugs Travis was ready to go after him, but from what I could tell the shot looked way back and I knew it was gonna take some time so I told him that we needed to wait and give him some time. The rain had really started to pick up and the water was really starting to fill up all the low laying areas, so I grabbed my rain jacket and told Travis that I was gonna go see if I could find any sign before it all got washed away. of coarse he wanted to go with me and start tracking his buck but I knew it still needed more time so I had him stay in the blind. I walked out to the little corn patch to see if I could find any hair or any sign of an injured deer but there was already about 3" of water standing at that spot so I headed to the tree line where he ran to and marked the spot where he entered with my orange vest then started looking for fresh tracks. I went in about 60 yards before I found tracks that I knew had to be his but couldn't find any signs of blood because of the rain. I backed out and went to the blind. Travis was smiling from ear to ear and immediately ask if I found him, I had to tell him again that I was just marking his trail and that we were going to let he lay till morning. It took about an hour for our ride to come back so we had a real good talk about how fast things happened and how much he was enjoying the time up there. when I saw our ride coming down the road we climbed down and began the 500 yard walk to the road. Most of the trail had 2-3" of water and there were some places that had over 6". by the time we made it back to the truck we were both soaked even though we had on our rain suits. Needless to say it was a sleepless night for the both of us. Monday Morning we headed out to go search for the buck. the corn field was a complete soupy mess. we got to the woods where I had placed my vest and followed the trail to my hat that marked his tracks, there were no tracks anymore. We decided to split up about 50 yrds apart and slowly walk through the trees in hopes of finding the buck laying dead. we walked all the way to the property line and found nothing. at the end of the property was a CRP field that was a complete tangled mess covered in briars and brush. my friend left us there and went to get permission for us to cross on to the that property and Travis and I walked over the tree line again to see if we could find any sign of him. after getting permission we headed out through the CRP and it was a slow and trying journey and honestly if we didn't step on him we probably wouldn't had found him in that mess anyway. We did jump up 5 deer out of that field and although we didn't see it 1 of those was a big one. he sounded like a hippo running through there. After 5 hours of looking through the CRP and the woods we had to call it. absolutely no sign of that buck was found.
My son was absolutely heart broken but he kept his spirits up and said this was the best weekend we have ever spent together. He said he learned so much on this trip and cant wait till next one.

Guy s sorry about the delay in getting this story finished up but after being gone for the last 5 days Ive had a lot to get caught up both at work and at home. Not sure what the point is of dragging everyone along for days. Everyone on here was so kind to offer a gun for his son to use and this is what he does in return. Wow! that's about all I can say about this........ but I have been in contact with many people by text

after replaying the entire thing over and over in my mind I honestly believe he missed the buck. the deer ran off but he wasn't running like his tail was on fire but he also didn't have his tail up either. the big splash of water could have absolutely come from a corn stalk. he was shooting a 20ga 250gr hornady SST, if he would have hit the deer there would have been hair somewhere and most likely blood on the trees when he hit the woods. I do believe that Buck Fever struck him and he just missed the shot. it happens, we go on to hunt him again later this year. there is another youth hunt so hopefully we can make the trip once again. I went on this trip to spend time with my son and a real good friend. I had hopes of Travis killing a big old buck but really just hoped we would see some deer. We left there with a story we will share for years and memories that will last a lifetime. Id say Mission accomplished .

I've always heard if they run with their tail tucked or down then it was a hit.
Hate y'all didn't find it.
