We went riding one hour before dark to learn our way around. Alabama is in bad shape guys. Whatever they are doing up here it is working. Deer standing in yards and walking across the road in front of us. We did see one stud chasing on private land. Not much of a GPS signal around here so we will have to use paper maps and compass to search the forest land. Sure would make it easier if we could us google earth imaging. Going to be rough hunting in these hills from a physical stand point, However I got two very strong fellas hunting with me. We will be putting in the work the next couple of days with a ton of scouting. It’s nice to just ride around and see deer.

I think it's primarily because gun season is only two weeks instead of what almost 3 months. If everyone hunted with crossbows and bows there'd be a lot more deer I think.

THIS!!! 100% I would love to see a tally of how many rounds get flung at the total deer population in this state over nearly 3 months. I feel like I was probably safer in southern Afghanistan in 2012 than a deer is here in AL during gun season. Looking forward to updates! Hunt hard and safe gents!

Found a few deer today. The trails are awesome and finding a few scrapes here and there. There are zero acorns in the areas I have scouted. All the deer are eating honeysuckles and fescue. I have seen deer in corn fields and soybean fields, but it’s all private or land locked where I can’t get close to it. This is going to be some rough hunting due to it being all mountains. Day two scouting is going to be rough to get too. I will check back in tomorrow night.

If you haven't been to Kentucky the day before the gun opener? you'd be blown away by what happens when the sun goes down. There are so many out of town hunters that just can't stand it when their headlights hit a 140-150 standing in a bean field in a curve. It sounds like the 4th of July until about 2:AM.

Scouted this morning and hung a couple of stands in some honeysuckles. Decided to hunt this afternoon and I seen one small 6pt. He come straight to the scrape I was hunting. Maybe I can call im a good one tomorrow morning. I believe the rut is just fixing to start the next few days. Scrapes are around in certain locations but not everywhere. Time to get some sleep for my first morning hunt. Can’t wait.

Yes still seeing deer but no shooters. I did however see a big one riding in the truck at 1:00 today. He was standing in a fescue field 20 yards off of the National Forest, but he had no choice but to come from the forest land. I can’t wait to scout it out tomorrow. It’s 100% chance of rain here tomorrow and that’s when I like to do my scouting. All bucks are separate and most does do not have little ones with them. We finally have a cold front moving in tomorrow, so things should get going good any day now.

Tuesday Nov. 10th LFTT. I finally got a cell phone signal while hunting for the first time. I’m set up on the edge of a big ole nasty pine/honeysuckle thicket with rubs and scrapes in it and around it. Two trails within shooting distance flat wore out. Local have said all week the rut will start Saturday when the cold front hits. Well it’s Saturday and it has sleeted and snowed on me for the last hour. It’s 30 degrees and the temp is falling. I only have one glove and it’s not the one I hold my bow with. Here is a little snow on my bow and the thicket. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/kK0p26z.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/xObxktx.jpg)

Ok I swapped locations for the afternoon hunt. I’m set up on some very good trails 200 yards off of a 5 acre fescue field. Wind is swirling everywhere right now, but maybe it will lay and pull my thermals down this draw at goody time. I have no idea where these deer are bedding, but I am between them and there food source. Seen one buck on side of the road today at 1:30 he was walking and looking.

Yes that’s on the road riding around. We have seen 3 bigger than that one, but nothing worth shooting while hunting.

One of my buddies couldn’t stand to let anymore does walk. He was 80 yards off the road and it was a straight down hill drag to the road. So he had the green light from us to shoot one if he wanted. It’s a Ohio trophy doe. I wish I had brought scales, because it’s huge. She is bigger than the bucks we kill in Bankhead. The picture doesn’t do it justice. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/ej3LdkJ.jpg)

Fixing to walk in to a logging road between a bedding and feeding area. It’s not much area between them so I got to do some slipping. I have already seen this buck 3 days ago. He is a shooter. Now if I can get him to cooperate a little. It’s 20 degrees with 3 mph winds out of the east.

Long day today. I shot this 10pt at 6:45am. The deer did nothing I wanted it to do except get within shooting range. I was up the chittiest tree in Ohio and he was coming almost straight on and was on me before I could stand up. If I would have stood up the tree stand would have popped or he would have caught my movement. He was almost down wind and I was getting a little excited. So at 13 steps he stopped and acted like he was going to turn to my right and I couldn’t shoot that way and especially sitting down. So I made a bad decision and shot him facing me with his head down through his neck on purpose. I got about 12” of penetration and he ran about 20 yards and stopped. He acted like he wanted to bed down, but continued to walk very slowly and made a complete circle around me out of range till he was out of sight. He eventually went back the way he come from and I lost blood. Total tracking yards was 350 yards and the first 100 yards looked very promising. Here is a picture of the buck and the blood trail. I know what I did wrong and should have known better. We are seeing a ton of deer, but nothing worth shooting. We noticed today more people killing deer. We went by the slaughter house and a few good ones was killed today. I seen 7 does and a spike this afternoon. I did finally find some big red oak acorns. It looked like a pig pen under them. First acorns I have found and I have walked miles.

We were waiting for the rain to quit before we go this morning. However the rain has turned to snow, so we are going to hunt from 11 till dark. We are finally on a hoss, but he is with a doe. We seen him yesterday bedded down with her. We are going to climb on the very top of a hardwood ridge were they bed at and hope for the best. If we can get lucky and kill this one it would be awesome.

That big SOB run a doe by me at 3:34 at 60 yards. I stopped him with a grunt but he wasn't leaving her. Maybe he will keep running her. He is a nice one.

Well we are headed home. The guys with me are home sick. If it was up to me I would stay till the rut was over. I will be back and next time it will be Nov. 11th-18th. I feel like that is the main rutting time. We only got a few days of it, but it was fun. None of us tagged a buck, but we learned the roads and scouted a good bit. So next time I will be prepared and have a head start. The deer population is very high and you can see browse lines everywhere. The acorns didn’t make, however I found two big red oaks that did make while looking for the buck I shot and it looked like a pig pen under them with very few acorns left to get. The deer was not putting down scrapes like they should and I have seen that before in Bankhead when there is very low food source. We seen zero planted green-fields even on private land. The deer eat fescue in pastures, honeysuckles and corn on private land. There is very few crop fields. Wayne Forest looks to be 95% Hardwoods. I never saw any planted pines. The deer will be in bad shape come end of February. The deer move like normal every morning and every afternoon. We even seen big bucks eating out of feeders in broad daylight on private land. How they grow big racks in that area is a mystery to me. From the deer I seen and the mounts and the deer in the slaughterhouse, the bucks are no bigger than the ones in Bankhead, but it’s a hell of a lot more of them in Ohio. Cell service has got to be the worse in the country. I would say only about 10% has internet. Most of the population is an older generation. The only people left in the area with money is the ones with old money. The younger generation has left Lawrence County Ohio. I will try to answer questions to the best of my ability with my opinion. My opinion is just that “My Opinion”. I have no degrees in wildlife and everything I have learned over the years has been passed on to me or I have come up with my own opinion.

I have only hunted out of state one time before and that was Kentucky. I’m 42 and not getting any younger and plan to do this every year. My wife informed me if I ever leave the house for 10 days again I will come home to an empty house. So next year I’m going to shoot for 9 days and press my luck. Well that's nice

BE careful Joey! Hope y'all make it in safe we may pass y'all on our way to South Dakota to do our 10day adventure/ hunt. We're trying to beat the storm to St.Louis. I could hijack the thread now to update everyone but cell service won't be an option in 90% of where we will be. I will try to start one in the other forum. If we find service

j think I'd rather do this than get in a hunting club around here Then you won’t have anywhere to carry your son and up his odds of seeing and being able to kill a deer around here.

I’ve got pics of that castle from a few years back when I went to Ohio hunting, it’s owned by a lawyer from Miami named Thomas R. Post best I remember. I believe it had burned, and he completely restored it. Cool pic Joey
