Gotta agree with Robert, although as others have said the deer won't know the difference. I just prefer a short action in a deer gun, and I think the .30 caliber bullet is the most efficient in a short action. I can load my .308 rounds to produce the same velocity as factory 30-06, and I can do it with less powder, so that's what I mean by efficiency. The deer won't care.

Go with the 30-06 if you think you might ever wanna hunt something bigger than a deer with it.

I had 308 Rem,,,30.06 Bar,,,300 mag Bar,,, and a 7mm Rem... you can never go wrong with any of the 30 caliber rounds,,, they all kill deer real well.

I sold all my hunting rifles except the 7mm mag.. I really like its ballistics and it can be used on Safari if your into that as well as thin skinned game. No matter which caliber you choose ,,I think O'Connor said something like this,,, it's where you put the bullet more so than what size bullet your using.

Whatever you choose, you have to call your gun/scope combo a "rig"...

I'm saying it's more expensive to shoot and does the same thing the .308 will do. Except it hits harder.............. meaning more damaged meat sometimes.

This is important, and needs to be remembered.

Have killed more critters with a 270 than I can remember.

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

Of those you picked,I would lean toward the 308,but not because it would kill a deer any better. As I get older i prefer lighter rifles to carry and lighter recoiling calibers. Because of that I would buy a short action 7mm-08 or 6.5 creed. Something like the Barrett Fieldcraft or Kimber Montana, though you will get better QC consistency from Barrett and better CS if anything comes up.

All that said ,any gun in any deer caliber would be fine for 99% of the hunting I do. I won't be shooting over about 300 yards and I'm more likely to shoot one at 50.

My favorite right now is a Forbes 270. It fits me better than my Kimber ,but I'm a big guy. Pick a gun that fits you and in a good inexpensive caliber like the 308 you mentioned and you will be fine to kill anything in NA. That won't mean however that you won't buy another gun.

You don't have to spend big money either. It just all depends on what you want.

How far is long range ?

I' ve killed a bunch with all three. Not a big fan of the .270. Short range to about 300 yardish absolutely , no doubt .308. If you are going beyond 300 yards or so , I'd say '06 .

I tote a .308 and love the round , about 125 yds is my longest shot.
