Would you rather him say it and not mean it? He's not religious, just like about 100 million Americans. I feel the same. I've never viewed him or his actions as being an actual practicing Christian. He's doing a fine job as President in my opinion.

Creeds were developed to help the laity understand the difference between orthodoxy and heresy. There have always been attacks on the truth from the enemy, and at a time when most people could not read they needed some way to discern the difference. It was about 3 centuries in before the church was able to agree on the Canon of the NT; it's hard to discuss such matters when you face the threat of being fed to lions.
I've never been part of a church that used the Apostles Creed in worship, but I have been a visitor in churches that did many times and I've always read it with them. I don't believe that it actually comes directly from the Apostles, but I agree with everything in it and didn't mind reading it aloud. I don't see it as a big deal that someone chose not to read it.

Sorry but.....>>> in keeping with the comedian Jeff Foxworthy............>>>> you know you are a total goob when >>>> you have never heard of the Apostles Creed (or Nicene Creed). Sorry, couldn't resist. ****** "holy catholic church" does not refer to Rome or the Roman Catholic Church. "catholic" is a word that means "universal" and "holy catholic church" means the Christian Church as in all the believers in Christ, not a particular branch or denomination of Christianity. >>>>There was a time when every American and person of the Western World knew this. But we are now a dumbed down society and civilization - even amongst the Christian believers.

my history is fuzzy but it came out of the Council of Niceae (Nicene Creed). early church of constantinople? was basically the early beliefs of the very early christian church. said at every catholic mass. taught as the core of beliefs. i say it because i believe it. other than a few lines i think most christians would agree with most of it. in today's world i'd hope all christians would focus on what unites us vs the very small differences in our core beliefs.

It is important to remember that there was not a Roman Catholic Church in the 4th Century.
Later in the early Middle Ages the Roman Catholic Church developed into what it we see today (and what it was during the Reformation era) . But it was not the only Christian church back then or during the Protestant Reformation era.
There was the Greek churches which never bowed down to Rome and the Popes, and they became to be knows as the Orthodox Church(es). These churches of the East were in the Eastern Roman Empire, and throughout Asia Minor, the Near East and Egypt. And the region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Even in Persia.

Don't overthink the Apostles Creed....learn the history and ti will make sense. If you have never studied much about the early church, it would be a good study to broaden your insight and understanding. The Apostle's Creed is and was a very important writing ---because ---it is an excellent summary of what Christianity is in contrast to false teaching and false religions or etc. That was the original purpose---common people could hear (primarily) or read (most could not) a concise account of what being a Christian means (doctrine) in writing in the 2nd-3rd Century. It was also a teaching tool for church leaders. The earliest known creed was the old Roman Creed in the 2nd-3rd Centuries AD. That creed is very similar (like hardly different at all) and is the base for the formation of the Apostles Creed which gained official recognition in the 8th Century. It was used by the Church for that same purpose. After the Reformation and the split from the Roman Catholic Church--the Apostles Creed took on a much bigger importance to the Reformed churches. Orthodox (Greek) Church also was involved in the Reformation too..but we don't have time for all that in one post). Why? Again, it is an excellent summary for the people to know--a short, concise statement about Christianity. People didn't have Bibles like we have today, most could not read Latin or Greek or even English/German/French, etc.......that was for the educated and well off. So the oral telling of the story of Scripture was an essential part of the early church. The Creed, based on scripture and not in conflict with Scripture, therefor was a great way to teach and recall the core beliefs of Christians. The Apostles Creed is a good all-around summary...it covers all the basics. Think of it like a defining document that has Christ at the center. It is written by man for the people....but has been studied and accepted by great Godly men for ages....but as a non-Biblical writing it hits all the main theological points that are the core beliefs between all who are Christians, regardless of denomination of the church they may attend. Churches reformed from the Catholic church use the Creed because it defines the gospel doctrine well for the people. Some phrases have been changed over the years and for good reason....some phrases have been explained in detail in multiple catechisms of Reformed churches to make sure the proper understanding is known. Example in Greek the terms for descending into the grave or to death can be interpreted as descending into hell ....now Jesus did not go into hell, but he did go into death until the resurrection. The Westminster catechism explains this well in Question # 50: Westminster Larger CatechismQ. 50. Wherein consisted Christ's humiliation after his death?
A. Christ's humiliation after his death consisted in his being buried, and continuing in the state of the dead, and under the power of death till the third day;[201] which hath been otherwise expressed in these words, [He descended into hell] . Nothing outweighs Scripture, but remember we sing songs written by men too...worship and praise...but a good song will not conflict with scripture. The Creed doesn't conflict with scripture either....if you allow for a true understanding of the descent into hell and the little c in catholic. I grew up in a Southern Baptist Church where we really didn't do creeds....Independent churches I've attended over the years didn't either. Typically evangelical churches don't use ancient creeds much either. That's because Evangelical churches do not have the same orthodox and Reformation connection where tradition, creeds and "methodology" of worship is so common. Protestant churches rooted in the Reformation do go back to honor that tradition. My grandparents of my mother's side wee Methodist so we went to their church often. I've been a member of Briarwood PCA for a long while now too. Apostles Creed has been used widely since I can recall as a child.

My Grandfather was a Baptist preacher, never heard of it. But I'd bet for sure your grandfather did know it because besides the Bible, it is probably the most well known writing summary of the faith.

I’m just gonna say it. I have a problem with the President and First Lady not saying the Apostles Creed at Bush’s funeral. I give Trump a pass on most everything but that’s just not right. Well, you can redeem yourself and vote Democrat in the next election. You should feel much better after that.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.
