Josh28 in the hunting public thread had made that comment and I’ll never forget the first time I heard that. And in my opinion it’s the truth.

Years ago I started hunting a 400 hundred acre track of land in Monroe county that belongs to a friend of mine family. Property has been in thier family for generations. There are some members on here that hunt next to this track that belongs to other members of the same family. Like extreme heights hunter. So he knows what I’m talking about when hunting this area.

The first day I met my buddies dad at the camp house to look at his property he said, “Leroy you can forget everything you think you know about deer hunting because these deer down here are hard to hunt.” I’ve known this man for years and I know he’s not BS’ing me. But at first I thought man how hard can it be? What’s different about these deer in Monroe county from the deer I’ve hunted in Lowndes, Bullock and Montgomery County.

I’ll tell you what makes them different. This area is so rural that these deer don’t see or smell humans in their woods until deer season starts. And once they get that fear they are damn near impossible to hunt. It’s like the level of alertness is off the charts. The best chance you have of killing a buck is when they are looking for love from the middle of January until the last day. The chance of seeing a young buck or old one in a green field during the season is pretty much not going to happen. So I definitely know what another hunter means when he says, “these deer are hard to hunt.”

I loved hunting in Monroe County. It was very good to me.

Now I'm up in Colorado and got a fuzzy head right now but I think there's troof to this. Deee on farms I hunt are around people all the time. Maybe tractors or trucks or whatever but we're around em year round and it doesn't bother them. Seeing 15-29 after driving thry the farm all day happens regular

I have hunted in Butler county on family land for close to thirty years and the deer are much like those in Monroe county plus with a small tract and small food plots there never has been a 250-300 yard shot. Most shots are 70 yards or less. Those deer are educated and hunted by locals year round and have learned how to stay alive.

It is extremely different. I am convinced that the deer in western ky and surrounding areas are literally dumber, like they look and act almost like a completely different animal. There are big bucks damn near everywhere. I've seen prolly close to ten 3+ year old bucks this season all bow hunting public land near my place. Alabama is essentially a deer and turkey desert compared to northern states.

Go to Google earth and look at all those other places that aren't pine plantations, cutover and swamps and you will understand the difference between ag land and pine plantation land. Deer are in the pine plantation, just harder to see and figure them out sometimes.

Nearly all of my Monroe county bucks have been killed between bow seasons and the first week or so of rifle. Most have been the magical week of muzzleloader. After the shooting starts they disappear like a fart in the wind. I know they are still there because I get them on camera in their same pre-season haunts but it’s almost always between 9pm to 4am rather than spread throughout the day. Have to go figure out where they’ve shifted to to travel duringbhe day but our land has so many tight ridges and draws that you just cannot cover much area visually at one time and they will be downwind of you what seems like 90 percent of the time.

I understand the difference. I've hunted both habitat types. Ag trumps pines but the places I hunt are big woods and the deer up here are still bigger, dumber, and much more plentiful even not being near ag.
