.45-70 is NOT a meat destroyer. i've seen too many killed with it. medium hole in, somewhat bigger hole out. blood, blood, blood, blood ...
stob, i have an 1894 in .44. williams fire sights on it. i've not killed a deer with it yet. but with my 67.5 year old eyes, i'm afraid, i'll have to go to a lower power scope. i'm thinking a 2.5 X old school leupold or other, maybe even a scout set-up. i don't want to lose the little rifle's carry-ability ... If you shoot the low power stuff you can eat right up to the hole. If you shoot the high power stuff it will bruise the whole ribcage and look like someone threw a can of soup through it sideways.

Those guys are probably too busy telling their buddies how it’s the best thing that has ever happened to deer hunting since corn to read this thread. The only thing that a creedmor has that a .270 doesn’t is the ability to be built on an AR platform. Besides that a .270 is the absolute best North American big game Rifle for shots out to 500 yards. Beyond that it gets interesting. Not outside 100 it’s a 12g slug all day long.
