A buddy and I were discussing some outstanding mouth calling that we've seen on youtube the other day. He mentioned a technique called "huffing" and said that's how some of these guys get their yelps and clucks to sound so good. He also mentioned something about it being a no-no to use in calling competitions. Anyone know what he's talking about and how to do it? Google was not very helpful on this one.

He’s talking about using your Diaphragm to present your air, and your gullet to control it. Just like a duck call. Easiest way I can explain it is the air comes from the same place as the “H” does, if you were to yell “HEY”. You control it with the same place in your throat that you feel move when you swallow. Atleast that’s my version, take it for what it’s worth because I’m no expert.

It would make sense that something that sounds like a turkey, although “unorthodox,” would make you lose points in a turkey calling contest

Ha....I still remember the some of the worst calling I ever heard in the woods. Now, I'm not what I'd consider a good caller (I'd hesitate to even say "decent") but I hear someone walking through the woods calling and it sounded like pure garbage. This dude is getting closer and closer...finally the dude comes over the crest of the ridge.........the dude was actually a hen turkey. Chuckle every time I think about it.

Like Phil Robertson said, a duck himself couldn’t even place in a duck calling competition. Probably the same for turkey competition.

It’s all about Cadence and what youre trying to say. But sounding remotely like a turkey helps a lot.

Each note of the yelp at the top of the note your mouth is open and as the note gets to where the rasp is your mouth closes same way the cavity of a box call is open at the top of the note and closes at the ending of the note shutting off the cavity of the call.. The more your learn to use that gut the more you can manipulate the call or even yelp with out moving your jaw or your lips..

I can’t even begin to explain how I make sounds on a mouth call and I know I could never win a contest but I’ve been able to fool a turkey or 2 and that’s all I’m worried about. Took me forever to be confident enough to use one in the woods. I’d love to be able to run one like the pro’s but doubt I’ll ever get there

Hold your hand in front of your mouth and Yelp. If you don't feel air coming out you're (huffing) using air from the right place.

Most people I know use the “air” that u use to say TOO. Say too several time and your gut won’t move and you can say a lot of them before running out of air. Now say help several times. Your gut will moves and you can’t say as many. Takes a lot more air. That’s where the 2 note, breaking yelp not comes from.

Give me bout 15 more minutes, I was dreamin about beavers..........
