School me on Alabama vehicle requirements for catalytic converters. Son was written a citation for not having cats on our truck. The specific AL ordinance that was cited is for mufflers, which the truck has. The truck is loud and knowing him...he wasn't babying the throttle, but no other traffic laws were broken. Advise?

Alabama code requires the emission system of a vehicle to be in good working order, which the catalytic converter is part of. Federal law (EPA) also prohibits removal of a properly functioning catalytic converter.

Put an actual exhaust system on the truck and don't be an obnoxious turd

Pay it and move along or possibly face much larger expenses for getting sideways with the EPA.

I wish they'd write more tickets for this. There is no reason to hear someone's loud exhaust passing by your house at 2 am.

catalytic converter is an EPA mandate that said if your gonna cut one off dont draw attention to it my pre 96 chevy runs alot better without the cat but I wouldn't straight pipe it or put glass packs on it.

I agree 100%. There's some jackass kid that comes through downtown Prattville in a raggedy Tahoe all the time and he'll just be pumping the gas all the way through trying to rattle the windows out of the stores. I saw it parked somewhere one time and really wanted to go get a bag of potatoes and a broom handle and fill his pipes up for him.

You must live in 2003 then. Around here these days, I see (hear) very few bumble-bee-sounding cars anymore.....it's dirtneck teens/early-20's kids that are either running unmuffled straight pipes that sounds like machine gun fire as they drive down the road, or straight-piped diesels that sound like a Mack Truck from Hell hitting its jake brake. Both equally obnoxious and deserving of a good throat punching.

These country boys in my neck of the woods, just about all of the young ones, drive a jacked up pickup that is so loud you can hear them coming for 5 miles. Drives me nuts

most of them you can hear the tires before the pipes coming,.. but then the pipes for a long way leaving.

Yep, seems to be the 20 year old beater trucks with lift kits and nearly bald mud tires around here.
