My statement from 1/26/19. ^^^^ Anytime you see a HUGE buck and a $3K gun and the hunter wearing $1K worth clothing and gear, you can just about guarantee that it's a 'high fence' kill. I carry a $2k+ rifle, some fairly pricey gear, and wear nice camo. Does that mean all of my bucks are high fence? We’ve got five strands of barbwire around our place if that counts. How many sponsors you got?

I’ve already formed second opinions on those who thought this deer was free range. U know what opinions r like?

I’ve already formed second opinions on those who thought this deer was free range. I guess you can tell free range from high fence or you don't think deer get that big in Bama or Lowndes county? I M curious as to how you can tell.

What an absolute ass. I've seen that guy or someone that looks an aweful lot like him somewhere before.

Here's an honest question. Why would someone claim that a deer that was killed in an enclosure on a pay hunt as being a free-range deer?? Most of those bucks are cataloged with pics on them on the high fence's website for advertising. I mean it is just stupid. Word will get out. Is a day of internet fame worth losing your reputation for life? I just do not understand this mentality and it seems to be a common occurrence that replays itself on here year after year. Most of these types aren't even hunters, which is why they are dumb enough to think their 6,000 dollar deer actually is a new record. They haven't hunted long enough to even understand the difference in free range v. breeder facility. And the guides at these high fences really put the sales pitch to them, talking about what an awesome hunter they are, how that buck has been the hardest to hunt, and how it's the biggest deer they have ever seen killed anywhere in that area. The guy's rifle looks brand new and his name brand high dollar hunting clothes look brand new. I guarantee you the high fence guides put such a show on for him that he legitimately believed he had killed the county record and sent it off to the record books. You think the high fence guide is going to turn around and tell him his $6,000 buck is ineligible for the record book since it is nothing more than livestock?

How many sponsors you got? Not a single one. I just worked at a gun store and got really good discounts during the time of my life when I also had very few bills.

The cut in the ear is suspect that it had a tag. That’s clue number one. Now I’m not saying a deer can’t cut it’s ear in a natural way, it’s just a hint that deer a tag. I’ve hunted Lowndes my whole life. Deer like that were taken regularly in the 80s when everyone was planting soybeans. I just haven’t seen many huge deer like that since. The amount of high fence operations have is staggering in Lowndes. I just came to the conclusion it was a high fence deer based on that. We all have external factors that affect our opinions and those were mine. I could care less is someone shot a deer in high fence or not. Frankly, I could give 2 chits about deer hunting. I like to go watch the deer, take my kids, and eat venison. And I can tell you, I’ve seen bigger deer than that on hoof in Aransas from a duck hole. I just thought it was funny all you guys getting butthurt over someone else’s opinion because it’s different than yours.

Pen deer don't interest me at all. Had a guy at the camp this season bragging about a 140ish 10 pt he killed in Texas. O asked if it was free range. He said " well it's a high fence operation but it's like 10k acres". I just change the subject and the guy got all butt hurt because we didn't want to hear about his big deer. To each their own.

I hunt multiple properties in Texas, some free range, some not. I can tell you from personal experience that there is very little difference, if any at all, in hunting free range deer and hunting high fence once you get over about 1800 acres inside the fence, and once you pass 3000 acres, any perceived difference is gone.
We have seen a buck chased by a coyote jump a high fence. I will also add that there are very few places in South Texas brush country and the Hill Country that you could find 10,000 acres without a high fence impacting it in some way. I hunt a 2500 acre low fence place where the neighbors high fenced 2 full sides, and a 5500 acre low fence parcel with one full side an part of a second high fence. It's really almost everywhere.
You may agree or disagree, but the small fence operations, less than 400 acres, really aren't hunting. There is no way to sustain the population. Once you get to the big units, 2500+ acres, especially the ones with no supplemental breeding, the deer are as wild as they are anywhere I have hunted in Alabama.

UncleHuck, I understand what you are saying and if you enjoy hunting in a fence more power to ya. It just doesn't interest me at all. I'm not saying that is I was invited to hunt in a large enclosure that I wouldn't go, I'm saying I wouldn't go around showing off and bragging about a deer that had been raised in a "pen" no matter the size. I know it's big business in Texas and I'm happy for them but it's just not for me. But I'm not going to put a person down for hunting in a fence, just don't come bragging to me about a deer that was killed in it.
