For me, it's hard to put a #1 by just one single western, there are just too many good ones. Sadly, most were made decades ago...and I hope that someday we may return to the days when a good western or two will hit the silverscreen per year. I will add three more to the already outstanding list:
The Shootist The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Red River
You gonna pull them pistols, or whistle Dixie?

Quigley was a western, Quigley was a cowboy hired by an Aussie. They had never seen a Sharpes. Sellect played several Western roles that were great, but not made for the big screen, as has Sam Elliot. These are available on NETFLIX.
The Sacketts Last Stand at Saber River. Crossfire Trail The Shadow Riders
Sam Elliot Tombstone Conagher Rough Riders (war movie) Quick and the dead The Sacketts was a great movie. The Shadow Riders, Sacketts, Conager , Crossfire Trail and the Quick and the Dead were all Louis Lamour westerns made into movies.

AC has hung out with Sam Elliott. After “We Were Soldiers,” Sam developed a friendship with Sgt Major Basil Plumley, whom he portrayed in the movie. Plumley invited him to the Ia Drang reunion and Sam attended. I went with Dad. Plumley had Sam hauling beer to the hospitality room when I walked in.

Not sure anyone has mentioned The Shootist. John Wayne's final role. Jimmy Stewart, Richard Boone, Scatman Crathers and Harry Morgan supporting. It ages well with you. As a kid, it was a pretty good Western. A little older, and it was a sweet story about how old folks could still be romantic At this point.....Lauren Bacall is pretty hot!
Used to be a lifeguard, until that blue kid got me fired.

Shootist is on over on the Outdoor Channel, but Four Brothers just came on, so I'll be swapping back n forth
Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many!

MC, that has to be one of the dumbest comments made on Aldeer. it's a freakin thug movie, not a western. Millenial mind at work? Well, it was the western part of Detroit.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

This thread is like many others on Aldeer. It makes me realize how old I'm getting. A good Western movie made after the mid 70's is a rarity. Josie Wales, Lonesome Dove, and Unforgiven are among these. Prior to that, most of the John Wayne movies are among the best, but the list is not exclusive to his movies during that era.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

MC, that has to be one of the dumbest comments made on Aldeer. it's a freakin thug movie, not a western. Millenial mind at work? Say what you want the plot line has the criteria’s that would make a good western. Family member gets killed by an outlaw gang, so the other family memebers take the law into their own hands to get revenge and take out the outlaw gang. That’s basically the plot to Tombstone
