I've been to Shiloh and Gettysberg. Both are very chilling places.

I'm glad you posted that. We got to step back in time for a few minutes and enjoyed it even though the guy knew what he had coming most likely. I love civil war stuff but would love to learn more about the history of it.

Most likely starved to death. A lot of bitching about Andersonville but the south couldn’t feed it’s own at the end. Yankee just did it out of meaness.

I don’t think he wrote that 3 days before he died because he stated that his Pa was leaving him to go home and he would like for him to write when he got there also he stated that he was cut off from his regiment and was trying to get to them also it says he was captured in May and a POW at that point. Dates don’t add up. He probably starved to death over the 3 months that he was a POW.

I live in Falmouth, which is right across the river from Fredericksburg Va. My neighborhood is exactly where the union army camped before getting defeated when trying to cross the river. Lots of people have found stuff in their backyards.

I’m in a hunting club that borders the Wilderness Battlefield.

Lots of sacred ground and history up here.

Cool stuff. Took my mom and step dad yesterday over to chickamauga where my great great GD fought in that battle. He was in the 41st miss then. Heard he later fought some with Forest group also.

The thing that will strike you as a Southerner is that there is this big beautiful cemetery with marked headstones and you walk through it and realize that it's only for the Union soldiers and you winder where all the Confederate soldiers are and you walk around and realize that they were all chunked in a ditch and covered up.

In 1866 all the Union soldiers were re-interred. I can't imagine what a dirty job that was for some poor laborers...

The Cemetery does have a nice poem posted at various locations. it is "The Bivouac of the Dead."

I found it interesting that he never once said in his letter that he loved her and the kids. Which he even thought would be his last one he would write. I’m guessing that he saw so much death and guts that it harden his heart. The letter was mostly matter of fact.

He talked about there agreement. Lots of marriages back then we’re not based off of love, but rather convenience.

Most all the letters from the common soldiers read like that. He was either a conscript or knew he couldn't go home for the fact that he would be executed for desertion. It's also amazing how family members could visit their sons during the war safely.

It be's that way sometimes.
