huntin the big lease
I've seen just over 30 longbeards this season, last season I saw 43. I don't save birds as its first come first serve, but I do spread the killing out best I can. jake sightings are around the same as last season also. keep in mind this is over 6 counties

Gobblers can live ten years or more, i’ve read 6-7 years is their typical lifespan in areas where they are not heavily hunted. Man is the llargest predator of adult gobblers in Alabama. .

If there are 1000 gobblers in a county, 90% may carryover absent human intervention. The idea that you can’t stockpile gobblers or increase your year to war numbers on a property by limiting your harvest is absurd. It’s basic math. It may be hard to do if your neighbors are burning through em but if they aren’t then you can and will enjoy better hunting by limiting your own harvest. Some birds roam far, some birds don’t. Blah blah blah. It’s all basic math in the end.

OP you are doing it right, hats off to you.

Once again thanks for all the replies! I didn’t think this would be a hot topic. A little more info about my 1700 acres it’s not all combined it’s broke up a lil bit, but I’m the only one turkey hunting it this season next season one more hunter will be added now that being said the property that borders me nobody turkey hunts and across the river my buddy does and has killed off his land! Most of the birds that I scout and watch all year end up mainly on the parcel of land on the road I live on. I possibly have a few more than wt I know is here! Thanks again fellows like I’ve said I’ve had buddies shoot the crap outa em and not have any gobblers to hunt for Atleast 2 years I like to hear birds and hunt them not go out and not hear anything.

That's my motto. Helps when you have neighbors like Festus and rolloverdave. I usually kill at least one or two older birds every year that I guess they "saved"

Wow, I guess I really don't understand basic math, but I think it's based on my absurd idea that turkeys are a renewable resource.

All this time I have been thinking that if I provided them with the habitat they needed and protected the hens, then we could kill some of the gobblers every spring and the next year we would still have plenty of turkeys. Well, that actually has been the case and has worked great on our place since 1967, but by all means, if you don't think that will work for you, don't shoot any.

I will hush about it; good hunting to all.

We treat jakes like hens and don’t consider shooting them. This seems to work cause we have enough to hunt every year.

We had 3 jake's last year. This year we have 1 gobbler and 3 hens. Not sure where the 3 jakes went but they are gone. Trying to decide if we should leave the gobbler or hunt him. None of his hens have gone to nest yet so not sure if they have been bred
