The eastern USA is loaded with light pollution.

The darkest skies I can find in Alabama are west of Greenville to south of Selma. Many will disagree probably.

The darkest skies I have ever seen were in southwest Texas.

Here's the USA dark sky map and you can dig out your favorite location and see the darkest area's of the country.

The dark skies are good for astronomy and star gazing.

It gets pretty dang dark north east of Greenville near Highland Home. It isn't in Alabama but off hwy 13 in Tennessee where Wayne, Lewis and Perry counties meet is about as dark as anywhere I've been. Your about 15 miles from the closest small town and there are very few houses.

Hwy 106 from Georgiana to Brantley is in the dark zone also. I'd hate to break down on that road late at night, not one station between the two towns.

Some of the prettiest stars I’ve ever seen were at night drifting the Spur for Swordfish

It’s amazing how many shooting stars you’ll see offshore when your running at night for hours with noting to do but look up.

Old Texas Alabama. Located in Northeast corner of Monroe county and just South of Butler and Wilcox county line. Beautiful place to be around a camp fire in late January.

That's a cool map. Thanks for posting. There's a lot of grey and black area on that map that I'd love to own some property in to get away to

Most stars I ever saw was 3am on the west side of the Sierras. I’ve can’t imagine how it must look in the middle of the night on the deck of an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific during blackout conditions.

Nope is Grandpa ended up selling it about 10 years ago (maybe longer) and i sure wish I'd a had first dibs, cause he pretty much gave the lot and little camp away.

Wouldn't mind an affordable tiny lot there, big enough for a camper or two.

That map shows an almost straight line of dark/bright running from about Laredo, TX North all the way to eastern ND. I guess this is the edge of the Great Plains maybe?

I leave Wednesday for two weeks hunting near Kamanjab Namibia. The ranch I hunt on is 30 miles from the nearest paved road and there are zero clouds this time of year. Nothing like sitting around a mopane fire smoking a Cuban cigar and listening to hyenas and leopards call. You can actually see satellites at night.
