The most enjoying setup I've ever had was one of those roof top tents you can put on top of a Jeep... we had it on a 4x4 Suburban. You can pretty much go and do anything with that setup and leave all your junk in the truck. Hike, hunt, fish, whatever you want to do during the day. When you are ready to go throw it all back in the truck, fold the tent up on top and drive away. This is a setup for forest service roads out west and that type thing.
They really aren't that expensive all things considered and if you have a place to store it... great setup for truck camping which I enjoy more than just straight hiking. You can do some really fun excursions
