A 6 year old kid doesn’t even know what travel ball is unless he’s heard adults talking about it. Your kid may be the exception here but MOST kids that play travel ball have no business playing and are only playing for the name “travel ball”. It’s a prestige thing for the kids or probably more so for the parents. There was a guy here locally where I live that was just dying to have his kid play travel but was never invited to, didn’t make the cut on the tryouts. So, he started his own team. One day they scrimmaged one of the teams from the park and rec league, and absolutely got spanked. Good luck to you and your son whichever way y’all go.

The problem with rec ball is you have 2-4 kids that want to be there and want to get better but you have 8-10 that are there because mom and dad want a babysitter and or to get their kid off video games. This is all great for everyone but the kids that want to do better. As a coach you spend all of your time trying to make the 8-10 kids better that could care less and very little time with the kids that want to do better. I will agree the travel teams now days are watered down with kids that are average or below. If you do decide to do travel ball do your research and find a good team with good coaches that don't over do it because there are a lot of them that will play every weekend. If these parks would do a competitive league it would make the travel ball not needed at the younger ages but they don't want to hurt any feelings. This is my opinion as I have lived it with two boys and wished I would have started my oldest in travel ball at a sooner age. Is it expensive? YES but I wouldn't trade the time, friendships and memories for anything. And like others said coach them yourself but make sure the kids have fun at that age This is exactly what I mean. And for the ones says teach him myself well I do every day I get. My work schedule will not allow me to be a COACH but I can assist when my schedule allows. As far as pushing my son too hard that I do not I asked him if he wants to practice if he says yes we practice if he says no we don't is his decision when we start practicing when he gets ready to stop we stop no questions asked. he and one other on the All-Star team actually want to be there and learn the others play in the dirt pick flowers kick dirt on the basis what not it makes it very tough for the two that want to learn to learn and for the one saying that my son doesn't know what he wants just ask him Last night they got beat 28 to 4 and they are the All-Star team. LOL You want them to take on better teams? You can assist, now, do you, or is it just easier to complain?

I do assist but when the head coach has too much pride to listen to input then that's an issue.not wanting the entire team that is now the All-Star team to play travel ball there are other individuals who have spoke interest in a possible travel ball team tryouts would be held the team would be handpicked if we decide to go that route

Best invention ever fence 250 yards(yes I meant to say two hundred and fifty yards) with parents behind it. Baseball's supposed to be fun at that age. Far as injury's kids shouldn't throw uncle Charlie till they can shave. (For you "baseball is boring" uncle Charlie is inside baseball talk for a curveball.) Saw kids from south florida mlb talent@16 but didn't make it till 22 so the mental side could catch up to the physical.

Girls softball is insane too. I recently watched a young family member play and folks take it way too serious. There’s literally no excuse for it. It’s not worth getting upset over. This is what keep telling my SIL/BIL but they insist that it will get her a scholarship..... believable if she could make her HS team.

My thoughts: 1) It's 6u, it's tee ball. Not ready for travel yet. 2) Don't like the coaching then man up and volunteer like the others did. 3) If your son is complaining about other kids it's because he heard an adult do it. 4) So if you're not interested in coaching in league ball, who's going to coach this travel team? 5) Who's going to tryout for a startup travel team with no record and no coaches, other than the kids already on the all star team?

On the other hand, a couple that are friends of my wife and I, started their 3 sons playing travel ball at about 7. Dad even built a baseball field in the back yard. I guess it will payoff. Oldest son is in Omaha getting ready to play tomorrow, middle son is contemplating whether to play at AU or sign with the Orioles organization with a signing bonus at about 2 mil. The third son, who is about 9 may be the best athlete of the bunch. As a bonus, a cousin also just signed with AU.
Of course, mom and dad are really exceptional people that had help keeping all the priorities in order from a great set of grandparents, and others. These boys are not normal on the field but off they are All-American kids. A one in a million family.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Parents seem to love it. They hate the coach that doesn't play their son every inning and they love to yell at their kids when they don't fulfill their own unrealized childhood dreams but , again, the parents seem to love it.

This is what keep telling my SIL/BIL but they insist that it will get her a scholarship..... believable if she could make her HS team. ....and a “scholarship” is usually to a juco, which is usually worth a couple of grand and a commitment to play sports when you should be studying. I don’t know many girls going pro in softball. Sports are great, but keep it in perspective.

1st off its coach pitch not t-ball 2- where did you get that im not interested in coaching? if you read the previous post i said i can not head coach, the reason i didnt coach during the regular season is the team he was on had outstanding coaches and i wanted to sit out and enjoy it as a parent which i did and my son did very well. 3- i have not mentioned the other kids to him or around him this is from him 4- i will have a hand in the coaching as an assistant coach but again my work schedule does not allow me to be a head coach 5- i have at miminum 11 ppl interested at this point and only one that is currently on the all-star team

6 is too young for travel ball. Get his fundamentals strong and if he's a stud maybe do travel at 10-12. If you are going to coach travel you should be a better coach than any parent. Example , my son played on a team that the coach played at Ol' Miss and was drafted by the Cubs. He was a "baseball man " and great coach . He knew how to get the best out of each player. He would have been a great HS or college coach. There wasn't a parent on that team qualified to second guess him or needed to. Was a pleasure to play on that team, and they won, ALOT . My son will tell you that was the most fun he had playing ball .

My son didn't play travel ball until he was 13 years old. (and that was for one year only) He ended up having a great D-1 career and turned down a top ten draft round pick out of high school. Make sure he is getting a lot of sound, fundamental reps. Travel ball can be a good thing later on because the competition level is usually stronger. Be patient and take him fishing. If he can play, it will come out in the wash! THIS! I have a son that plays college ball. He started travel at 12. I wish he hadn’t. At that age the parents all get so worked up over winning that they will sacrifice their kids health to do so. Too much baseball is a bad thing. I can’t stress that enough. Let your kid just play local. When he’s about 14 they have showcase teams and if he’s good enough let him try out at one of those. You said all the other kids at age 6 are playing in the dirt???? That’s exactly what mine did at age 6. He wasn’t very good. He cared more about goofing off than playing. When he got a little older he started caring and made progress in learning the game. You can’t learn the ga,e at 6 years old. Let it go and let him have fun. Odds on him being a superstar and signing a scholarship are slim anyway.
