I currently help coach a 5/6 all-star team. From what you described in your initial past, our coaches go far beyond what you son is currently experiencing. Our job is to teach the boys about baseball while making sure it stays “fun”. For the past month, we’ve worked hard with the boys... but you also have to know when to back off as well. Couple of words of advice. One, keep him wanting just a little more. I’d rather have a child who doesn’t get enough than one who’s burned out and has no interest - and that’s an easy line to cross, especially with a first child playing sports. Two, if you’re serious about his development and are convinced your local park isn’t capable of helping, change parks or get in with a travel team that plays a light schedule. Three, consider the alternative of a personal coach. Having weekly coaching for 3-4 months can be very beneficial, but as I said earlier, know where it needs to stop. Finally, realize as the adult YOU are the one that needs to determine when enough is enough. You wouldn’t let him eat unlimited amounts of dessert because he wanted to because you know it’s not wise. Same applies to this situation. Good luck!

That's a really good point. He's not old enough to know what he wants...

Think hard on these points being made about getting burned out. I've made the point and seen it made a couple other times now. Once they're burned out, they're done with it. Don't matter anymore how much daddy wants them to play.
