I’ve started looking for a truck for my 15 year old and found a 2012 Chevy with 242,000 miles on it. How high would you go for a first vehicle? That's a heck of a first vehicle.

If it has the 5.3L engine with AFM, keep lookiing. The AFM system in the 10-13 5.3L engines is the downfall...lifter fails, wipes out the cam, and your looking at a rebuild or new engine. Do a search on your favorite search engine for GM AFM failures and you'll start looking for something else for him. I had a lifter fail in my 10 at about 120000 miles, and it was about $3000 for a rebuild with non-AFM parts and tuner to tune the AFM out (most of that was labor, as I was in the middle of a shutdown at work and didn't have time to do it myself)
GM supposedly updated the AFM starting in 13, but they are still having problems with it. No AFM in the 4.8L or 6.2L of of that generation of GM fullsize trucks.

Just me..but as bang for your buck goes...i thin the best used vehicles for the money right now are 2000- 2006 toyota tundras with the 4.7L 2uz-fe. I searched profusely and found these to be the best deal to be had. I see them with 250k or less with 4x4 for less than $7k all the time and Plenty of power..stylish(to me) and have a reputation of being almost indestructible engine wise. First thing id do if i found one is put a timing belt on it and a water pump..after that id drive it til the wheels fall off. I found mine with 149k miles in near pristine condition for $9k and and have sense drove it everywhere without a bit of trouble and its a 2003 ex-cab 4x4. Research them if your intrested. Good reasonable truckS used that wont break the bank..i looked at them all and this was the conclusion i came to.

Get a 6.0 Chevy. I think they’re dang near bulletproof.

On a 2012 Chevy 242k is just getting broke in good. I wouldn't give it a second thought. I've got 300k, on three different Chevys still going strong. I’m not sure his comes with the cow to push it

Apparently you're right because I searched autotrader for 2000-2006 tundra within 100 miles of Dothan and got zero results.

Do you guys feel the same way about a Ford? I have a 2000 F150 with 305k miles. I use it as a back up vehicle and I use it as a hunting truck. Everything on it works.

My dad has a 2006 chevy 1500 with a 4.3 he bought new. I can guarantee ya that I could let anyone drive it and not show them the mileage and have them guess as to what it is and they wouldnt be even close. It has 350k on it. rides, drives and runs like a new one. Doesnt use any oil etc. I wouldnt be scared to get in that truck and head to the west coast in it. Other than the regular oil changes, brakes and belts it has had nothing done other than a tune up (175k) , 1 injector replaced (320K) a alternator,(240k) and a broken throttle cable (345k) if its a well taken care of vehicle I wouldnt feel bad buying one in the mid 200's . I’ve started looking for a truck for my 15 year old and found a 2012 Chevy with 242,000 miles on it. How high would you go for a first vehicle? That's a heck of a first vehicle. Thats what I told my kid when he got a 2001 Z71. Even with 210k miles it was better than anything I had driven till in my 30's.

TO ACTUALLY answer your question. personally I wouldn't go with something that high for a kids 1st vehicle. Spend a little more and get something with less miles on it.

I’ve started looking for a truck for my 15 year old and found a 2012 Chevy with 242,000 miles on it. How high would you go for a first vehicle? My son bought a truck with that many miles. Stupid move for a kid who has to pay for repairs out of his wallet. Also like most kids, he had to get LED lights, paint this , etc. So he sank money on the truck and didnt get a penny for the "mods" he did. He ran if off road/muddin (it was 2wd drive) and eventually blew the head gasket. He learned a hard lesson. Trucks are stupid expensive and I would steer him toward a car as a 1st vehicle.
