First off, one unit that does multiple floors rarely ever works perfectly. You’ll have hot upstairs, cooler downstairs or etc.
You are borderline with a 4 ton size wise.
If the furnace is that old, I would bite the bullet and replace both. Price can depend on a thousand things. I would have 8500 ready to spend though.

I’d give my left nut for a $350 power bill any month For a 2400 square ft house? Really? What kind of electrical are you running?

Home. Mines about 3800sq ft, I’m just saying $350 sounds good. I average $475 to $575.

My house is almost identical and I have a 35 year old GE setup that’s original. So far I’ve gotten 2 quotes for 4ton single stage split systems with 80% furnaces : Goodman at 6700 and trane for about 1k more. I’ve got a Tempstar guy coming out next. I think that is who I’ll go with if he checks out like I’ve heard and his price is close. Keep me posted. Be interested to know how Tempstar comes in. A guy I trust says just pick the best unit for the money because he works on them all and there is very little difference between brands other than cost. I don't know, though.

You should replace the furnace also, and most likely will have to, all systems now must be a minimum of 14 seer energy rating, think of the seer rating as your gas mileage, it doesn't make your unit cool faster or blow colder air, it still can only remove x number of btu's per hour, (48,000 but's per hour for a 4 ton) but it uses less energy doing so, that being said, that 14 seer rating is mandated by the feds, and if you don't replace the furnace along with the outdoor unit and evaporator coil, your new system wont be 14 seer, as far as I know, all the HVAC supply houses in Birmingham wont sell any equipment to any dealer unless it's a matched up 14 seer system, I highly recommend you replace the furnace as well as the AC system, and also upgrade to the 92% furnace, it's not too much of an upgrade, but will save you a bunch on your gas bill.

If he works on them all the time, he should tell you that “You get what you pay for” and that’s especially true in this industry. Most of all, make sure the installation company has a solid service team and that you think the company will actually be around for a long time.

I’ve got a 5-ton new unit that was built in 2014.
It’s a heat pump. You’d have to have your ac guy supply the air handler. I was quoted $1500ish including installation and the handler.
I’d take $900 for the heat pump.

He could replace just the condensing unit and case coil with no problem at all. Any 14 seer straight air unit would work fine with any regular old furnace assuming they match up size wise. It isn’t normally recommended, though.

I've installed hvac all my life and I can tell u it doesn't matter what system u buy now if installed correctly u shouldn't have any problems and I know I'm about to start a fight but it doesn't matter if ur doing trane or Goodman this is a situation it's not what u get for the money.they all come with a 10 yr parts warranty.. just so u know trane ain't the unit they use to be. I love the little Goodman units .. I know a lot of reviews dog em but if u let a reputable dealer do em u will have good service out of it
