A bad coil pack possibly

Funniest damn thing I’ve ever heard, I’d hate to know how many millions of dollars been spent on what autozone and that $15 code reader said would fix it

but i thought autozone only hires certified master techs to run their scanners? i know my customers believe thats how it works. we just throw those print out scan receipts in the trash and then actually start diagnosing the vehicle

Yeah but much different than a $15 code reader. You can run different test and look at lots of background data. it’s very common to have codes that really don’t directly led you to a proper diagnosis by themselves. VVT issues are a prime example,most likely it would have a code for random misfire or maybe even misfire for a couple certain cylinders, then you spend a bunch of money on coil packs only to have the misfire continue. If you take the time to look at all the background info in a real scanner and know what you’re looking at, you’ll know that you have a completely different issue. A worn cam lobe or a weak valve spring will also cause a misfire code.
