So, I've searched these forums and haven't found anything on this. Are any of you concerned about the corn you put out, how you store it, etc.? Especially with all the folks buying in bulk per these recent threads. Are you concerned that some of the non-certified corn may be high in aflatoxins? Or that it may be hurting the turkey or other bird population?

The data on the harm aflatoxins cause to birds is significant and should cause anyone to be concerned, IMO.

The only difference i see in texas vs here is they scatter it down a dry road and here people seem to want to dump it out into a big pile anywhere.

One of my members just pours his corn in a pile. I mean, duh.... when it gets wet, it's not if, but when, and it's soon, going to start mildewing with heavy dew or rain. I asked him to at least spread his corn out where the kernels are not touching each other and where they have the opp to dry out after a rain.

It seems like common sense to figure that one out. Maybe mildewing corn is fine but I'd spread it out where it could reasonably dry out after a rain. I don't think alpha toxins get enough consideration as it pertains to wildlife.

....Because everyone in Texas does the same thing laugh

I feel pretty sure there's plenty of feeders and corn piles/troughs there too. Probably way more on an absolute number basis.

What about dead standing corn, with a wet husk on it for days during a rainy week? I figure the deer will know what to eat and what not to eat.

Oh Id agree with that but texas also doesnt get but half the rainfall that we do yearly statistically so its a drier environment overall also. a trough up off the ground, or a broadcast feeder throwing out small amounts is much better than a big pile dumped out.

Most of the deer/turkey corn sold in Texas is certified as free from aflatoxin. Very few just dump it on the ground, that's what God created timed feeders for.

Dumping corn in a pile doesn’t cause aflatoxin. May cause rot. But not aflatoxin

^^^^ he’s right you know.

Why are people acting like no corn has ever been put out in bama?? Tons upon tons has been being poured out for years. Now folks just don’t have to wear tennis shoes! laugh

Taken from the link below.

The worry isn’t over once corn is purchased. Hunters should store and feed corn carefully to assure that mycotoxins don’t increase.Since the toxin- producing fungigrow best under warm, humid conditions, hunters and wildlife enthusiasts need toguard against ever letting corn get wet.

Simple answer is people don't care past shooting a deer because it is so incredibly hard to kill one in Alabama. So anything that makes it achievable is acceptable and be damn the side effects!
