Just walk in a supply house and throw out some apartment complex name tell them you work maintenance and your normal account hasnt been paid by corporate office so you need to make a cash purchase from them. 60% of the time it works every time

Hmm...the capacitor has a date on it of 6/18...anyway it's going bad after only a year? I figured it was the contactor.

Or should I just do both?

clean the coil and go from there if contactor is bad the unit wouldnt run at all if capacitor is bad it may or may not run but if it does it usually runs slow or will hum as it tries to pick up speed i still think its a dirty coil throwing pressure switch on a hot day

Gkelly

. What catches me is the fact that he can off and on it and it works . I had a few that would do that . By cutting it off and on would cause it to make enough magnetic force to close the points.

just us hearing about is a hit and miss thing . It could be a few little thing and some big things wrong with it . I have sanded the pointS and it work just fine .

What's hell is when two litthe things go bad . Cause you to pull your hair out . lol

Was the breaker hot when it shut down? Is 240 passing thru the breaker when it quits?

that'd be my first guess, You could probably spray it with water hose and get enough dirt off to get you by, I would do like gkelly said and clean coils and change cap.

I had to replace a run capacitor and a fan motor on me and my brothers central air unit a week ago. besides cleaning your condenser coil on the unit outside,,, go to your air handling closet and take the panel off that hides you evaporator coil … they can be filthy too. I've seen evaporator coils dirtier than outside condenser coils. a shop vac can handle this chore

Would this panel be above the drip pan most likely? Our unit is so old I'm not sure what a lot of it is, honestly.

Thanks for the suggestions. Inspecting the outside unit this morning it's a lot dirtier than I believed and I will clean it up as best I can to see if that helps. Thanks so much, everyone!

It should be above that point or even with it ,,, you'll see about four phillips screws holding the panel it place and behind it you'll find the coil, you my have a filter in front of the coils.. Depending on the type of air handling unit you have it may look like this unit,, https://www.trane.com/residential/en/products/air-handlers/tmm-series/

Or this type maybe https://www.handymanhowto.com/clean-inside-ac-evaporator-coils/
