Hey been there and done that mine was in 82 got out of farming other than cattle. Sold the cattle in 85 and started over in 90 with a new wife and never looked back. Been the best almost 30 years a man could ever want. Wish the best and may God bless.

Well damn. Sounds like you have a good plan forward Marsh. Plus got rid of some stress. But I’ll admit that I’m going to miss the farming threads and pictures that went with them.

One potential option may be for you to lease out areas of your farm for hobby farmers. Set up someway that one person can have ~1 acre of farmland and plant what ever they like. Need to protect yourself from an injury perspective. I would bet people would pay decent $, especially if you agreed to help them prep the property.

If only you understood the situations they’re under. Tax brackets and slim profit margins won’t allow most operations to farm small scale much anymore.

Farming row crops and farming rice are 2 totally different operations. Been out of the bean market for a few years and have no idea what it cost to grow an acre of row crop now. Input costs on an acre of rice can cost anywhere from $600-$900 or more depending on how much you have to run the pumps and the amount of herbicide it take to control weeds and aquatics. Many different factors go into the operation. That ground we farmed was all enclosed with a big levee around it and all the rain water and water from fields had to be pumped out. And when you have 3 major rain events of over 10” each time, it cost lots of $ to pump all that water out. And $15 rice just doesn’t get it.

I truly hate to see it Marsh. It’s a way of life that’ll be history for a great many families.
