You have to reach down and undue a section that you just tightened enough to support your weight and then repeat the process to advance up the tree. My Summit climber is compact and has carrying straps. You attach once at the base of the tree, then sit down and start climbing.

sticks can easily get around limbs - with a climber, you either have to saw or find another tree; also, even the quietest climbers make noise, esp on a pine tree ... but 6/half dozen of another - hunt how you feel comfortable & enjoy; there's pro's & con's to each method in my mind ... i've used both over the years, and just lean towards steps/sticks/lock-on's personally ...
