It is impressive, but my 6mm will stabilize 95 and 100grainers just fine, and do so with the same velocity (or more) than the Creedmoor. The reason the creedmoor exists is because everyone thinks they need a high BC, wind bucking, heavy for caliber bullet to shoot deer at 400 yards.. In reality, if I had to take the statistical average of the yardages on all the deer I've killed with a rifle, I'd bet $1000 that number would be less than 100 yards.

Nothing wrong with the caliber(s) at all. In fact, I bet most of the cartridges we hold so dear were at one time "a solution to a problem that didn't exist".

What cartridge do you shoot??

Most of the time .358 Win shooting a 200 grain. About the perfect whitetail cartridge for the pine woods and food plots of Alabama.... right ahead of maybe a 7mm-08 slinging some 140's.

I'd would go out on a limb and say one of the stipulations for something to be called "The ultimate whitetail cartridge", would be that it is widely available, over the counter, from virtually any store that sells rifle ammunition.

I don't exactly recall an abundance of 6mm CM on the shelves at Academy, Bass Pro, etc. Something that has to be handloaded, ordered, or searched for to find isn't exactly the "ultimate" hunting round...

Sorry Gomer but I fail to see the connection between cartridge performance and ammo availability. The guy that buys his ammo at big box stores the week before season opens isn’t going to appreciate or realize the difference between a slow twist 243 and a 6CM.

Selection and availability is abundant online and I don’t have to experience the people of Walmart.

Since you gave a range and not an average distance, do you shoot more towards the 50 yard distance or the 500 yard distance?

Been there, done that and got the T-shirt. Then came to my senses and realized you don’t need a sledge hammer to driver nails although it will work.

.35’s hit with authority! But there’s no possible way you can call a 6mm creedmoor a varmit Rifle and a 7-08 a deer rifle. There’s only 0.039 difference in diameter and 7% difference in velocity. Both rounds will bloodshot meat about the same.

For the record I own neither of these calibers.

Outside of paper punching, there’s nothing I get from a 6CM, that other cartridges don’t already do as good or better.

I guess that's me......to me, when you describe something as "ultimate" for hunting purposes, the most important part is consistency. Does the bullet perform as expected, every time you pull the trigger. Who cares if it's not the fastest or flatest shooting...as long as it can consistently hit its target with enough velocity and energy to expand properly, and kill an animal ethically.

how dead is "dead enough"?

For Alabama deer hunting, I'll stick with my 165gr .308's that I can buy for $1/round and my $500-600 Savage that is more accurate than 95% of hunters are capable of shooting to begin with......because that setup is cheap, consistent and predictable, and kills deer just as dead as any other setup. Y'all keep arguing over who can kill paper "deader" than the next guy at eleventy-hundred yards.

Average is prob 200 yards. I hunt one overgrown field we cut lanes in like a sendero and you can shoot 500 yards one direction and 415 the other. There typically isn’t time for ranging so flat shooting is very beneficial, as is bucking the wind. If shots were limited to 300 yards and in, I’d just borrow Gomer’s 308 and call it a day.

So you're shooting, at animals, at 400 - 500yds without knowing a range? That sounds like a good way to wound a bunch of deer...

Yes these 6mm cartridges are very adequate for killing deer. I have seen many dead dear shot with .243, hell even a .22lr for that matter. But one thing I have never heard while tracking a deer though the woods at night with a flashlight are the words "I wish I had shot that deer with a smaller gun".

Shot placement is WAY more important than bullet diameter.

Isn't there about 100fps difference between the .243 and the 6mm Creed?

.243 was rolled out in 1955 as combination deer/varmint rifle for their Model 70, 88 and 100 rifles.

No significant performance difference between the 2 cartridges. The biggest limitation for either is bullet weight maxed out right over 100 grains. Y'all say 100 grain is all you need. I say BS. I hope you lose the deer of your lifetime shooting that pea shooter it would teach you a lesson that just might stick:

There is no replacement for displacement.

Period.

No argument there. But I would rather have a well placed 30 cal than a well placed 6mm. A well placed .22 will also get the job done, but I do not see many people touting that as a great deer rifle.

I have personally seen more deer lost that were shot with a .300wby than with a .243. Anecdotal, sure........but that's the gospel truth. Goes back to my post a day or 2 ago saying that a majority of people shooting "magnum calibers" don't have any business doing so, because they're incapable of doing so accurately.

(I realize that's not really relevant to the OP's post)
