Yea I’m all for buck tags being sent to deer hunters or OTC. I just didn’t know how tags would work for does. That’s where the state could make some obscure law and difficult. I’d be okay with a zip tie holding some form of paper to the leg with all the info. I didn’t know other states allowed that. In my head, when I think of a deer tag, I think of something sent to you either in the mail or you buy OTC.

Lot of states still send the physical tag, like Kansas, with your license. The physical tags, usually made of the non-tearing Tyvek, cost money.

Iowa requires a physical tag on every deer - buck or doe. On a doe you wrap it around a leg or slit an ear or however you affix it. But it's required. And they - like in other states with required tags - will hammer your ass if you're caught moving a deer without one.

Ohio's regulation on checking:

Physical tags do not have to be issued by the state and cost them or hunters money. Ohio requires tags but allows the hunter to do it themselves with whatever they want to use - big zip ties, a sheet of paper, whatever. As long as the info is on the tag/paper/whatever and affixed to the deer before moving and you then telecheck it, they're good.

Everyone bitching about trespassing, poaching and lack of compliance with deer and turkey check-in should want physical, visible tags on deer and turkeys. I know in Iowa they don't phuck around with anyone who has an animal with no tag. You're in trouble, period. It makes a difference.

What'll happen next IMO is weapon-specific licenses like in Tennessee and Mississippi for centerfire, MX, bow, xbow. There's too much money to be made to not do that. If you enjoy a crossbow and rifle, for example, right now you only buy one license but with segemented fees you'd have to buy one for each.

Some keep saying it won't happen but I believe it will. Just a matter of time.

We have physical tags and weapon and game specific licenses here in Louisiana. I have to buy a basic hunting, big game, archery, and muzzleloader license if I want to hunt every segment of the deer season. I even have to buy a turkey license also if I want to hunt turkeys. I wish it was as easy as Alabama is.

Yep. Same in Mississippi and Tennesse. I check a couple of years ago on non-resident for all segments and the total cost was idiotic. I chose to not hunt in those states.

If Alabama ever goes to a segmented deal like that I'll probably quit deer hunting.

Here in Louisiana the tags are printed out with the big game license. They are a plastic type tag with 2 holes in them to attach to the deer with a string or cable tie. You have to attach the appropriate (antlered or antlerless) tag with the date and parish of kill to the deer before you move it. It more of a transportation tag and better be on the deer if you get checked by GW. You then have 72 hrs to get a confirmation number for tag.

Thanks, marsh, for better explaining those being more of a transport tag. That's what I should've said. They've visible for checking, have the info and give a GW or taxidermist or anyone else at quick glance at least some assurance that it's been claimed-possessed by a hunter.
