Someone said that Ray said that he cut the head off because the coyotes got to it. If the coyotes in fact havent, then he may have got caught up in a lie. Not a good thing in his situation.

Reason I asked was someone stated he chopped the head off like that because the coyotes had eaten him up. Seems relevant to the story if that was a statement he actually made. But of course location trumps everything else.
