We need to carefully calculate what we are going to do. Russia and China have traditionally been allies of Iran. As I mentioned in an earlier thread, Persians and/or Shia have not traditionally been our adversaries. The Sunni have traditionally been our enemies.

It is interesting to look back at history and analyse how seemingly small incidents and alliances have led to previous global conflicts and how those conflicts directly led to subsequent global conflicts. (WWI) The alliance of Germany, Italy and Japan and how at least two of those countries felt threatened with regards to natural resources and decided to take a preemptive strike to attempt to secure the resources that they felt they needed. Sun Tsu states in his iconic book that you should always leave your enemy a way out and never back him into a corner where he feels he as no escape. If you do he has no option but to fight to the death.

Hopefully Trump is surrounded with knowledgeable advisers and he will listen to their counsel.

Straycat is pretty much spot on. Their culture, and cultures are the hardest thing to change about people, have been fighting wars for a thousand years. If they are not fighting "foreign invaders, in their words, they are fighting each other. The only time there has been peace in the Middle East is when they were conquered and ruled by an empire. The Babylonians, the Persians, the Romans, the Ottoman Turks, and the British are chief among these. The only way things are going to change would be the 2nd coming of Christ or the USA, Russians, and Chinese make a pact and divide it up based on oil output and rule jointly. I predict the former will happen before this.
