Any body seen on before? I saw one at the NWTF banquet the other night but it was part of a slide show and I wasn't able to get a good look at it.

Yes there is one out there, I think its several years old.

Thanks Chad. Appreciate the offer guys, but the info. in the other post had the density map. I don't know how accurate it is but based on where I hunt I would agree with the estimated numbers.

By the way, just b/c I don't have time right now to go back and look, but any of you know when the restocking program took place?

I think here in Jackson county it was 74 or 75 not 100% sure about those numbers but its close

Interesting. We heard/ saw very few birds up until the early 90's. They were around but seeing a drove didn't happen often. I believe the first gobbler was killed on our place in the late 80's. When I started hunting at the age of 14, in 1990 I heard one bird gobble several times and I talked about it for weeks. By the mid to late 90's things started really picking up and getting on several gobblers in one morning was about the norm but saw very few hens. Then around 8-10 years ago the population exploded. More hens more gobblers, etc.

If the restocking occurred in the mid 70's I wander if it took more than 10 years for the birds to spread over the entire county or this was just my observation and others saw turkeys way before we did.

I think the population booms in Jackson County correlate with the cicada hatches, but that's just my theory. It's holding up right now though.....I've seen more jakes this spring than I have seen since the spring of 1999. The one before that would have been 1986, and that's when turkey really started showing up in huntable numbers from what I've been told.

never thought about that. Makes a lot of sense. That being said, although we saw a record number of birds this past summer (which could be due to the cicadas) we have seen a huge increase in numbers for close to 10 years now. Each year our pop. seems to grow.

Maybe you're just doing a really good job of controlling habitat, or maybe my theory is totally bogus, but the population seemed to be dropping where I was hunting up untill 2009 when it started coming back up a little. 2004-2008 were really bad years for us as far as turkey numbers go. 2000 and 2001 were the best years I have ever seen.

LOL! I'm rarely alone on a hunting trip during spring gobbler season due to the number of birds. One year we counted 22 different birds gobbling on our land. I get real popular around mid March every year. Old friends start dropping by and calling up just to see how I'm doing. LOL!

I believe it. I only got to go once last year (youth weekend at that). I quit counting at 40 birds. Land is in the middle of the red in Cleburne county. Saw more birds in deer season this past year than I did the year before.

They nailed it on Jackson County.....Sand Mountain-Poor, Paint Rock Valley-Excellent, and the rest of the county pretty good.

Some of that red area is taking up those poor frozen birds on Skyline WMA too.
