It's the circling of the wagons. Defend a fortified position instead of giving it up and going outside. Get everybody in one room with few entrances to defend and call the police. Let them search the outside.

When we were kids, my friends car was being broken into and the dad went outside to see what the hell was going on and was murdered by the car thief.
