We always called it oat meal, but we had them as kids too and I also loved them. My mother often added fruit, Strawberries, banana slices or raisins. Now I have grits every morning. I got off eggs for a while. My appetite changes.

Try this... It's honestly like eating some kind of dessert. Take a pint Mason jar and put in: 1/2 cup of old fashioned oats 1/2 cup of Plain Greek yogurt 1/2 cup of milk 1 heaping tsp of cocoa powder 1 heaping tbsp of honey (or brown sugar) 1 heaping tbsp of peanut butter 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder (I use this stuff https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002QZORGK/ref=twister_B07Y2J84JG?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 because it is low in cholesterol and taste great.) Stir it all up, put on the lid and place it in the fridge over night. In the morning just grab it and go and eat it anytime you want for breakfast. It's great cold right out of the jar.

What's the big deal with steel cut vs. regular, or is there?
The only thing I know about steel cut is hipsters, vegans and "plant-based" eaters rave about them.

Clem, they seem to have more texture, to me. On the front or the back end? Asking for a friend.

If you need them sweetened, you can always put some raisins or dried cranberries in them or a little honey. I eat mine plain now.

Most folks eating oatmeal for health benefits avoid the sugar. That's how I grew up eating it, though, and damned sure put a lot on mine. I'm guessing the steel cut are thicker or different. One way of preparing them said to simmer for 20-30 minutes. Seems like a long time.
