Surprisingly slow here. Heard 1 bird on the roost a long way off. Nothing since.

Y’all he roosted near the property line and went off with 2 hens about 6:45 / 7:00am...he’s 150-200yds over there STILL GOBBLING

I’ve been listening to this joker all this time. He gobbled when i called 6-8 times but i can’t move on him. Instead - i’ve moved about 50-75 yds back...I just called and he cut me off gobbling at it.

Currently: waiting game

Man, what a morning. Got my butt wupped by a smart bird! Worked him from fly down time to just after 9. First turkey hunt where I've roosted a bird, went after him, and got to experience what sly little animals these walnut brain birds are.

I was on a small knob overlooking the bottom he was hammering in, he gave me two gobbles in a row signaling he was coming in, and he made a loop silently and came to my right over the small knob. I had gotten myself in a bad position slightly lower than him trying to stay in the shadows. He peaks his head over the knob at 5 yards and all I can see is an eyeball. My seconds hesitation, wanting a little more neck to shoot at, was all he needed to turn and run. Smart, smart bird to come at me like that.

Learned a ton from this morning. Like y'all have said turkey's can hear a long, long way. He would NOT gobble at the idiots riding roads and blaring their tootin' sticks, or my light yelping. He would hammer at woodpeckers hitting wood, pleated cackling, me scratching in the leaves, and when I would walk. I see why turkey hunting is so addictive, that was some of the most fun in the woods I've ever had.

Close. So close. But my old algebra teacher Greg Garner always said close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades and atomic bombs.

Is that a euphemism or is someone actually hunting crows?

that's all I can figure if a guy blows one every 2 minutes all morning long. But no, he was turkey hunting.

We got on 2 but my boys got a case of the wavy gun. Sucker was on a string though until he saw us at 60 yards.

Started off slow for me in Dale County but finally found two strutters who wanted to play. They were in a freshly planted cornfield so my son and I hit the woods for about a 3/4 mile walk to get around them and set up. Couple of clucks and he hammered back so I didn't say another thing. We were on the edge of some thinned pines that I burned about a month and a half ago just north of the field and I figured they wanted to go that way anyway. The next time he gobbled he was walking away from us so I cut at him and he hammered back. In about 5 minutes he hammered just out of sight about 50 yards away in the pines. Him and his buddy worked their way to about 30 yards and my son smacked the strutter. Bird weighed a tad over 20 pounds with 5 beards. Main beard was 10 1/4". Crazy thing is I haven't seen a bird, track or anything on this side of the farm all year until today. If I can figure out how to post pics I'll do it.
