Well I changed my mine about not going and went anyway. I remember my brother said you only get so many spring mornings. All my usual spots on WMA was inaccessible because of high water so I went to a place I use to hunt years ago. I eased along the first bench of mtn along flood water and couldn’t hear a thing due water running off mtn and wind howling . I got about 1/2 Mile in and thought I could hear drumming but never a gobble. I eased up one bench into some thick canes and continued toward what I hoped was drumming. After another 75 yds I was convinced it was and eased over to we’re I could shoot the bench below. I clucked one time and he doubled gobbled at 60 yds. I eased the hammer back just as he rounded a knob for a looked at 30 yds and rolled him. Nice 3 yr old bird with good spurs for a mtn bird. He made #50 for the little 410 awesome hunt.

Congrats to Matt. I leave in 6 days for my Michigan turkey hunt, and this thread gets me pumped up to hit the turkey woods. The local guy I hunt with is a Turkey Whisperer when it comes to calling in Gobblers. Last year, he called one in from over 200 yards.

PCP, our theory has been debunked. He’s got amber. Quite a bit. ![confused confused](/forum/images/graemlins/default/confused.gif) Wow! I'm astounded by that. Looking at the spurs, I wouldn't have thought he could possibly be just 2. Not only are they sharp, but they are curved enough for him to hang. How long are they? A couple of years ago there was a flock of 4 longbeards on our place at the beginning of the season. I killed one of them and the next week there was a flock of 3 longbeards. I killed another one, and there were 2 that were seen several times after that. I couldn't prove they were the same turkeys, but seemed to me to be a group of 2 yr old birds. The unusual thing was that they both had 1 and 1/8" spurs with enough curve for them to hang. And yet the end of the beards showed lots of amber. I thought the amber trumped the spurs and that they were just healthy 2yr olds from an early hatch. The spurs and beards of both of them were almost exactly alike. Those 2 did make me doubt the method more than any I have seen. I would say yours makes me doubt even more. Can you post a picture of it, with another beard for comparison? However old he was, congrats on a fine turkey!

PCP, for what it’s worth, I’ve killed several over the years with long sharp spurs that I would not have assumed to be two year olds that had amber in their beards. Same here...

Both birds I've killed this year, 1-1/8" spurs and 1" spurs had amber in the beards.

Well here goes the post of shame. I finally killed a turkey this afternoon (first one in two years). I saw two jakes and a good long beard in the pasture moving to an area I knew I could stand a chance of cutting them off. Well I slipped around and finally saw a head pop up down a bush hogged trail I made last summer. I knew it was a gobbler head and it started putting so I figured I had a 1 out of 3 chance of it being the long beard and was now or never. Well guess what it wasn’t the long beard. He’s going to be some good eating. ![rofl rofl](/forum/images/graemlins/default/roflmao.gif)

[/align][align:left] Fine gobbler Mbrock. Congrats. We had a crazy hunt this morning. Got on a gobbler with a hen around 9am. After a 2 hour standoff with him gobbling 100 times just out of sight at 125 yards I left my buddy and did the hen leaving trick. I walked down the road 150 yards yelping softly. The turkey was gobbling non stop. He got quiet for 10 minutes and I was sitting in the road waiting for the shot when he gobbled 25 yards above me on a small hill. I was sitting in the wide open with my gun on the ground beside me. Somehow I got my gun up and ready before he strutted out into the road. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.ibb.co/tssZdrB/8-ACBB882-6-CB1-49-BE-876-F-886623876-D40.jpg)
