Alabama Regulations 2011-2012 page 27 220-2-.02-.196ER Legal Arms, Ammunition, and Methods for Hunting
(1) GENERAL PROHIBITIONS: (a) It shall be unlawful for any person to use any method or have in their possession any weapon or ammunition contrary to this regulation while hunting or attempting to hunt game birds and animals or other species provided for herein unless expressly provided for by duly enacted laws of the State of Alabama. (b) It shall be unlawful for any person to refuse to submit firearms and ammunition or any device, instrument or accessory used in hunting to Conservation Officers for inspection. (c) Except as otherwise provided by Rule 220-2-.03 for laser type range finders with computational capabilities on bows, it shall be unlawful for any person to hunt with a bow or gun that has a light source attached that is capable of casting a beam of light (including a laser sight) forward of said bow or gun or to possess such a light source adapted for attachment to said bow or gun while hunting. (d) It shall be unlawful to possess any equipment that uses electronics to increase the ability to see in the dark (night vision equipment) while hunting any species of wildlife, both protected or unprotected species. (e) It shall be unlawful to possess fully automatic firearms or silenced firearms while hunting any species of wildlife.
(2) DEER: • Rifles using centerfire, mushrooming ammunition. • Shotguns, 10 gauge or smaller using buckshot, slugs, or single round ball. • Muzzle-loaders and Black Powder Handguns--.40 caliber or larger, provided further it shall be illegal to possess other firearms while hunting with muzzleloaders during the special muzzleloader season. • Long bows, compound bows, or crossbows. • Handguns or pistols using centerfire, mushrooming ammunition For WMAs, there are differenct restrictions: page 85 220-2-.55-.192ER Wildlife Management Areas, Community Hunting Areas, Public Hunting Areas, and Refuges of Alabama
(1) It shall be unlawful on ALL WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREAS, COMMUNITY HUNTING AREAS, PUBLIC HUNTING AREAS, AND REFUGE AREAS, all of which are established as "wildlife management areas" by Rule 220-2-.22 and all of which are hereinafter sometimes collectively referred to herein as "AREAS" or "AREA":
... (f) To have in possession any fully automatic rifle or any firearms, ammunition or bow and arrow except as described below: 1. DEER: Stalk Hunts - Centerfire rifles that have been plugged or are otherwise incapable of holding more than 11 cartridges and using mushrooming and/or expanding type ammunition, shotguns using slugs or single round balls, muzzle loading firearms .40 caliber or larger, or centerfire handguns with a minimum 4 inch barrel length using mushrooming and/or expanding type ammunition. All applicable laws regarding possessing and carrying handguns must be followed...
2. DEER: Stalk Hunting - Primitive Weapons Hunt -using only muzzle loading rifles, muzzle loading handguns, muzzle loading shotguns, or bow and arrow (including crossbow). Rifles and handguns to be .40 caliber or larger; shotguns to use single round balls only. Firearms must be incapable of holding more than one charge per barrel. 3. DEER: Dog Hunts - Shotguns using buckshot only. Any other place you hunt may have more special rules. Don't take it for granted that all of them are included above. For example: Forever Wild Tracts with hunting: Sipsey River Complex (Sipsey Sullivan, Sipsey Randolph, and Sipsey Robertson Tracts) - Tuscaloosa County, 3431 acres. Managed as a Nature Preserve and Recreation Area by the State Lands Division for unique riverine animals and wetland habitats. The tract is largely a bottomland hardwood forest adjacent to the Sipsey River. The forest, swamps, and river support populations of various game species, and some waterfowl. Big game hunting is limited to stalk hunting deer and feral hog with a muzzler loader, shotgun with slug, and bow/crossbow. (emphasis added) Always check for special rules in special circumstances. ![thumbup thumbup](/forum/images/graemlins/default/grinning-smiley-003.gif)

If I hunt with a rifle. I hunt with a 22-250. My buddy hunts with his AR and it is perfectly legal. If it is an AR that you hunt with just dont hunt with a 30 round mag. 5 is all you can have.

Why do you say that 5 rounds all you can use? I posted the regulations above for reference. I am missing something?

Show us the specific restriction or prohibition about hunting with a 30-round magazine for deer.

Right, WMA. Not on private land, though.
Got there late on Saturday. Hope to make the next one.

Hmmm.... kinda unfair to the deer. I guess it's ok if you're really skilled and don't push the cal's expectations of what that round will do. If I had a say-so, I wouldn't let anyone use that small of a cal to hunt deer nor do head shots. That's just me but it's not that big a deal. ![](http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj576/Grizz4x4/165698_1698698261166_1049175611_1944103_1378966_n.jpg) Shot from a 22-250. Not unfair if you actually know how to shoot...

SMB44, yes, shot placement is key and I'm glad you're skilled. However, if you miss forward and hit bone, that 40-60 gr bullet will not be able to compete with a heavier weighted bullet, and that's what my point is. It's not a big deal nor a passionate subject for me. I'm sure you're skilled and pick your shots and stay away from bone. Nice shot! ![smile smile](/forum/images/graemlins/default/smile.gif) I should have said that it is kinda unfair to the deer in unskilled hands.
