My buddy who is a forester said IP in Prattville is tight on quotas. He said he has plenty of wood scheduled to cut but unable to cut much now because of quotas. Now this is an area I'm familiar with. The mills give each dealer a qouta. The dealer has loggers that haul to the mills but MUST go through the dealer who has the load tickets. 1 load ticket = 1 of that dealers qouta. What no one has mentioned is WHO determines the quota for each dealer. HOW is it determined? It all starts on December 25 with really nice and expensive Christmas presents to the ones setting the quotas for each dealer. On top of that, dealers don't all get the same price per ton from the mills. I am not going to mention who my buddy works for but I have mentioned him several times on here when people are asking for someone to cut wood in central Alabama. I guess you are saying his boss man just didn't give the best Christmas gift last year! If he had enough tickets to run until Thursday, they are doing ok. I would guess he works for Parnell or Industree. Remember though, this is just the paper mills. C-N-S, poles, hardwood logs, etc people have their own way of doing things. But they have to have the paper mills to keep running.

In northwest al logging is going fairly good. Everything is on quota from pulpmill to pine sawmills. But we have a large quota to fill right now. Seen on news the homebuilding situation is fixing get really bad so that will blend over into our job in the log markets . Most pine sawmills have lots of storage for lumber so that probably be more in long term than today. If sawtimber gets into a crunch we will just cut pulp for awhile. We are blessed to work for company that has a fiber supply agreement with pulpmill. So we get to haul when all the gatewood producers are cut off. But that applies to two of our crews also. They are cut off also when that happens. The pulpmills that make packaging paper like one we haul to is doing really good. Can t make enough because everybody is home shopping online. The ones that make coated paper like printing paper is in a bind. Suppy for that is low because all schools are closed.thats main reason the ip mill closed in courtland closed few yrs ago. Im sure the toilet paper mills are doing good also.but in long term that may slow down because everyone got stocked up. I think The slow down in homebuilding is gonna be really bad in the long term. Thats what most loggers in my area is mostly concerned about.
